According to a spokesperson from the Wingham OPP Cheryl Thyssen, 22, of Brussels had THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 19, 1994. PAGE 11. No big deal RN Patti McManus, right, and Public Health Nurse Marguerite Thomas explain to the Grade 7 class at Brussels Public School that the Hepatitis B needle is really "not a big deal" to get. The nurses each received an inoculation in front of the class to dispel any concerns Gr. 7s get Hep B vaccine In the past 10 years the number of Hepatitis B cases has doubled with the highest instance in young adults. For that reason public health nurses have been visiting the coun ty schools recently to inoculate Grade 7 students against the dis ease. RN Patti McManus says that though the vaccination is complete ly voluntary, there has been close to 100 per cent participation at each of the schools visited to date. Hepatitis B, which is caused by a virus, attacks the liver. It will, Ms McManus said, make you ill when you catch it or can make you very sick later in life. "One thing 1 have learned through all my readings on the subject are that a large number of cancer of the liver patients are positive for Hepatitis B." Another aspect of the disease is that while it doesn't always make you sick it can be passed on with out either person's knowledge. Hepatitis B can also be deadly. Hepatitis B can be caught by contact with infected blood, body/ear piercing or tattooing with dirty equipment, using a dirty hypodermic needle, living with an infected person or having sex with an infected person. It will not spread through coughing,Jiugging or sharing dishes. Though there is no cure for Hep atitis B, the vaccine, which is done in a series of three shots, will pre vent it. Unfortunately, the vaccine is not cost-effective for some peo ple, Ms McManus says. Anyone who thinks they may be at risk can get a prescription for the vaccine at a cost of about $115, which may not be covered by fami ly benefits, she said. "It bothers me that for so many this vaccine is cost-restrictive." Anyone interested in receiving the vaccination for themselves or another member of their family should contact their physician.
