Venturers needs advisor Milestone Harvey Sillib of Blyth was honoured at an open house in Blyth United Church by family and friends. The occasion was Mr.Sillib's 90th birthday. H. Sillib celebrates 90th birthday at open house A long-time resident of Blyth celebrated his 90th birthday with family and friends at Blyth United Church, on Oct. 16. Harvey Sillib was bom Oct. 11, 1904, to Alex and Clara Sillib in their home near Shepperdton. He wed Ellen Jones July 15, 1926 and had two children, Mrs. Lester (Marjorie) Patterson and George Sillib (wife Ilene). Throughout his life, Mr. Sillib says he has worked at just about everything including farming, building the elevators in Goderich, constructing highways and working in a sawmill. He is also a member of the Masonic Lodge 303. To mark the special occasion, Mr. Sillib received plaques from MPP Paul Klopp, Premier Bob Rae and Prime Minister Jean Chretieif.. John's great-great-grandson, Scott Daniel O'Connell in St. Paul's Cathedral, London. A reception followed at the home of Dan and Shiela O'Connell, London. Mr. and Mrs. Delton Hallman of Cambridge visited on Friday with Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Snell. Beaver, Cub and Scout programs have already begun. The Venturer Company is presently looking for an advisor. Beavers this year are under the leadership of Nancy Hakkers, Linda Pease, George Reinink and Joan Goodall. There are 14 Beavers registered. New boys were invested Oct. 11. The 15 Blyth Beavers who registered last year to attend the 20th Anniversary Beaveree Campout at the SkyDome are looking forward to Nov. 26-27. They will be leaving Blyth by bus at 8:15 Friday morning to join 554 other Beaver Colonies from across Ontario. Congratulations to Cub Leader Dave Sparling, who is the new 1994-1995 Assistant District Commissioner for Cubs in Huron Legion donates By Mary Lou Stewart Guests at the October meeting of the R.C.L. Branch 420 were Zone Commander John MacDonald and Deputy Zone Commander Gord de Jong. Donations that were made through motions were North Huron Big Brothers, $50; Alzheimer's Association, $50; Blyth Minor Hockey Draw, $100; and the Wingham Seniors, $50. It was agreed to donate the prizes for the senior card parties during their season in the amount of $200. Zone Commander, John Mac­ Donald commended the Branch for their work in the community and presented representatives Bill Bearss and Doug Bell with a plaque in recognition of the Dominion Dart Championship. Deputy Zone Commander Gord de Jong commended the Branch on its work and its effort in retaining membership in the Legion. Rev. Came of Auburn displayed memorabilia and slides of the WWII 50th Anniversary Pilgrim­ age to Normandy this past June. Rev. Came thanked the Branch for the support given in this venture. Upcoming events in the work of the Legion include Poppy Day, Nov. 5. Meet at, the Branch at 8:30 a.m. Remembrance Day Church Service will be held on Nov. 6 at St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church, Blyth, meet at the municipal parking lot at 8:30 a.m. District. Other Blyth Cub Leaders include Henry Rouw, Walter Oliver, Allan Peel, Giselle Kelly, Don Goodall, and Chris Knox as Activity Leader. There are 22 Cubs currently registered. New Cubs were invested Oct. 11. On Oct. 4 all Cubs visited a local trout fish hatchery run by Gloria and Dave Hedley. The topic of several fall meetings this year will have to do with gardening. On Oct. 22 the Cubs will join the Scouts for Apple Day. Blyth, Auburn and Londesboro will be canvassed from 9 a.m. until noon. On Nov. 5 there will be a 'Sixer- Seconder Camp' at Camp Attawandarin for eligible Cub boys. Scout Leaders for Blyth are Lavern Clark, David Cartwright, and Warren Moore. There are 11 Blyth PS news GRADE 3/4 For the past week, we have been doing a reading-writing workshop, as introduced by Louise Sygrove. Enthusiasm is very keen as we read our own selections and do follow­ up activities such as research and classroom plays. THE GRADE 5/6 CLASS By Robin Mason and Ashley Taylor Our class is very busy. We are working on an Indian project. We will be finding out about the Huron Indian. We are working very hard. We are working in groups to discover how electricity works. We are having a lot of fun. The Grade Five class is taking an achievement test. We are also doing cross country and most of the girls and boys are in it. Our class is starting to study newspapers. We will be making our own news­ papers and printing them on the computer. GRADE 1/2 By Mary Thompson On Oct. 13 the Grade 1/2 class went on a walk to learn about fall. We looked at lots of seeds. I like the wild cucumber. We all had lots of fun. CHILDREN’S HALLOWEEN PARTY/ by ^^OPTIMIST CLUB^ OF BLYTH & DISTRICT Saturday, October 29th Blyth Public School 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. it Scouts registered. The emphasis this year will be to focus the boys on the program to bring out their leadership abilities. After being invested Oct. 12 three new Scouts attended the B.P. Woodsman Camp and Jamboree on the Air Oct. 14-16 at Parkhill. Nov. 11 all sections will be invited to participate in the Remembrance Day service at Blyth Memorial Hall from 10:30 a.m. until noon. The Blyth Apothecary will be closed on Friday, Oct. 21,1994 at 4 p.m. so that Donna & Dan can attend the graduation of Travis McWilliams. Dan Taylor was involved with the Big Brothers Association in Kitchener - Waterloo for many years. Travis was his little Brother.
