Several measurements will be taken on each animal and could include: weight, height, average daily gain, temperament, pelvic area, condition score and structure score. The program appeals to producers for various reasons. For smaller commercial producers who may not have facilities to give special attention to heifers, the program provides the facilities and management needed. For producers wishing to sell their heifers, the Heifer Development Centres offer a high-profile location where buyers can come to "shop" for heifers that fit their herd. More importantly, the program will provide producers with an indication of the quality of their heifers through the measurements they receive. "The centres provide measure ments that producers wouldn't necessarily take at home," says Brian Pogue, OMAFRA beef advisor who has been instrumental in setting up the program. "It also gives them a chance to compare their own heifers with those from other farms and management systems." The cost for placing heifers in Heifer Development Centres varies depending on the centre, as does the length of time heifers remain on the program. The cost is normally in the $350 to $500 range and heifers may stay in the centre from eight months to a year. BIO was extremely pleased with the number of centre managers who expressed their interest in developing a partnership with BIO. As a result, there will be 11 Heifer Development Centres for 1994-95 which will be located in: Algoma, Ripley, Orangeville, Blackstock, Owen Sound, Erin, London, Simcoe, Devlin, Dalston and Elora. For more information on the Heifer Development Program, producers can contact BIO at (519) 767-2665. Purchasing a vehicle is a big decision! Let us help you make the right one!
