Last week, the students along with teacher Rudy Hooftman buried some 'artifacts' at the back of the school property. These are to be unearthed in three years time a part of an archeaological dig. Grey Central Echo Girls give time to seniors By Trevor Wilson and Mike Cooper Last week at Brussels Public School we picked soccer teams to represent our school at the Huron County soccer tournament at Grey Central School. The teams were picked from Grade 7 and 8 students. The coaches were Mr. Wanless and Mrs. Uhler. Both teams did well. Thanks go to the Parents Association for raising enough money at the Spring Carnival to buy new mouth pieces for the Grade 7 and 8 band instruments. It is more hygenic not to be sharing. We appreciate Mrs. Slater and Mrs. Josling engraving the mouthpieces for us to use. Last week Mr. Kemp, Mr. Wanless and Mr. Teall attended an institute on peer mediation at Belgrave. On Sept. 28 some students from Grades 4 to 8 visited the Blyth Theatre to see the Ontario Youth Choir. They asked some students if they enjoyed the choir. We asked Sam Thomas what she thought about the choir. She said "I loved it." Then we asked Lance McLellan. He said that he enjoyed it. Finally we asked Brooklyn Wheeler. She said that the choir was excellent. By Ashley Gropp and Amanda Leger This week at BPS we had another spirit meeting. We talked about getting representatives from Grades 5-8 for the Parent, Teacher Association. We also discussed having fun days for the whole school and we talked about the code of behaviour. By Crystal Gulutzen Many families attended our Curriculum Night last week where they participated in an Outdoor Classroom Walk. The parents also had an opportunity to talk with the teachers about the curriculum and the expectations for the year. The soccer tournament and the cross country run were successful. Many runners advanced to the Cross Country Meet in Wingham. The Primary Division enjoyed a Fall Activity Day last Friday. Games were used to teach observation and environmental awareness within the natural setting of our outside classroom and they concluded the day with an apple feast. They appreciated the apples donated by Blake Griffiths' orchard. HURONLEA By Christianne Neville Amanda Bank and I volunteer at Huronlea once a week for four to five hours a week. We decided to do it because we thought it would be fun. I had volunteered at Brunner Nursing Home before I moved to Grey Central. Some of the jobs we do are working in the hair salon, taking the residents for walks and also playing different games with them like crokinole. We also work in the kitchen preparing sandwiches. Huronlea is such a big place we kept getting lost the first few times we were there. We enjoyed it because the older people have a sense of humour. Working in the nursing home is a good opportunity to learn how to get along with people and to develop patience. I would recommend volunteering to anyone. FEATURING MR. BRAUN’S CLASS By Crystal Semple and Sam Zahnd So far we are having a great year and we are learning a lot! Mr. Braun, the new teacher at Grey, has been a challenge to us. He has hit us hard with many new subjects. In science we're working with our environment. We worked outside with our anemometers which we crafted ourselves and in field study plots in the reforestation sights. We have learned many new things such as temperature and wind speed and had fun doing so. In math we are studying factorization. We are learning many new things that will prepare us for high school. We are studying climate and weather in geography and we have viewed many different videos. This project is taking place inside using text books and discussion. In language arts we have been learning how to write proper sentences and paragraphs. We have also been working on novel study from many different books we chose ourselves and we have been studying "Hit Lists", which are spelling lists, that have words like, germination, precipitation, and many other words that most of us have never heard before. Our music program is extraordinary. We have been learning many new Songs from our music experts Mr. Braun, Becky Rapson, and Crystal Semple. We have also been learning composi tion, note values and the history of music. Great accompaniment with our keyboard operated by Mr. Braun's laptop computer adds to our music class. In art we have created word arts and advertisements for our novels. In Tech 21 we are learning real life things from cooking to woodworking, it's great! It's much better because there is more technology involved. We only get this activity six limes through the year, so we take it for granted. Our students council election was held. The results were: Sam Zahnd for president, Melissa Knight for secretary, Darlene Hemingway for treasurer, and Jenny Wildman for vice-president. In our first meeting we discussed fundraising. It's a go! So far Mr. Braun's Grade 8 students are having a fun year and learning a lot doing so!
