HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 1994-10-05, Page 13Taking a break Stopping to smell the roses may not be possible, literally, during the Nature Centre's annual Fall Colour Tour, which was held this past Sunday, but there's lots of other beautiful things to see and enjoy. Following a cake cutting ceremony to celebrate the centre's 10th anniversary the large crowd in attendance took advantage of the sunny skies to embark on the horse drawn wagon rides around the picturesque landscape. Knox celebrates anniversary The sanctuary of Knox United Church, Belgrave was decorated with colourful arrangements of autumn flowers on Sunday morning, Sept. 25 for the annual anniversary service. Greeters at the door were Mr. and Mrs. Ross Higgins. Ushers and offering stewards were Jack Taylor, Steven Nixon, Erin Cook and Jennifer Black. The minister, Rev. Mary-Jane Hobden conducted the service and gave the children's message. Rev. Cam McMillan of Brussels was the guest speaker on the theme "How Does Your Garden Grow?" based on Mark 4: 1-20, the Parable of the Sowers. The choir anthem was Cantate Domino. The organist, Mrs. Elizabeth Procter accompanied by Mrs. Anne Spivey at the piano, provided special music during the service. All this, with a splendid attendance of worshippers, combined to make this anniversary a very joyous occasion. On Sunday evening, Sept. 25 at Knox United Church, Belgrave a covenanting service was held for Rev. Mary-Jane Hobden and the Knox-Calvin Brick charge. There was a large attendance with mem­ bers of Huron-Perth Presbytery and friends from the neighbouring churches joining with members of the two congregations. Mrs. Barbara Anderson, Belgrave presided. The scripture was read by Chris Palmer of Calvin-Brick. Rev. Cheryl Anna Stadlcbaucr-Sampa of Egmondville preached the sermon. The choir number was The Lord be with You accompanied by Mrs. Elizabeth Procter, organist who, along with pianist Mrs. Anne Spivey, provided special music for the evening. Harmony Spivey, accompanied by her mother, sang a solo. Greeters and offering stewards for the evening were Ivan Dow, Brandon Coullcs, Aaron Barnes and Mrs. Joyce Vincent. The chairperson of Huron Perth Presbytery, Rev. Paul Ross and Presbytery representative Rev. Bill Jones conducted the Covenanting Action. The commissioning and Blessing to conclude the service was given by Rev. Mary-Jane Hobden. Murray Scott was chairperson for the next part of the service, calling on the following people tor greetings: Mrs. Yvonne Coultes for Calvin Brick congregation, John McIntosh for Knox Belgrave, Mrs. Gloria Dow for Calvin Brick UCW and Mrs. Mary Hunter for Belgrave UCW, Maryon Dow assisted by Amanda Palmer, Rene Bleeker and Courtney McGee for Calvin Brick Sunday School; Mrs. Kathy Walker assisted by Paul and Nicole Walker and Nathan Spivey for Belgrave Sunday School; Michael McBumey for the Youth Group; Glenn Van Camp for Trinity Anglican Church; Murray Scott read a letter of greeting from Gamer Nicholson on behalf of Knox Presbyterian Church. Rev. John Roberts as a retired minister welcomed Mary Jane and expressed the hope that she would have a very rewarding ministry in this her first charge. After Mary-Jane had responded to these greetings her husband Allan Rush joined her and everyone was given the opportunity to give their personal greetings to the young couple who have come to live and minister here. A fellowship hour followed with refreshments provided by Calvin- Brick and Belgrave UCW groups.
