The team took part in a co-ed slo-pitch tournament held in Walton on Aug 13 and 14. Brussels Squirts take series This past week, the Brussels Squirt Boys WOAA team got off to a good start in their playoffs by eliminating Moorefield in two straight games. In game one, good defense and strong hitting helped the boys to an 11-5 win. Runs were scored by Joel Kellinglon (two), Michael Walker, Brian Oldfield, Nathan Garland, Andy VanBcck, Joshua Gropp (two), Matthew Cameron and Mark Kroll. The offense was highlighted by two homeruns by Gropp. Brian Oldfield and Mark Kroll held the pitching duties for Brussels, sharing six strikeouts and 10 walks between them. In game two, the offense continued and carried the boys to a 15-9 victory. The hit of the night was a fourth-inning grand slam by Nathan Garland. Runs were scored by Matt McCall (four), Joshua Gropp (three), Jason Armstrong (two), Nathan Garland, Joel Kellinglon, Stephen Todd (two), and Chris Blake (two). The defense was highlighted by a good tag by Joel Kellington at second base. Joshua Gropp on the mound for Brussels going five and two-thirds innings before reliever Brian Oldfield came out to finish through the sixth. They combined for 10 strikeouts and eight walks. The team has a bye through the second round and must wait to see who their next opponent will be. Blyth team finishes first Blyth Decorating finished their regular season play by edging the Brussels Bulldogs 1-0. The Decorators were led by strong pitching as Warren Moore pitched a no hitler. Steve Cook scored the only run of the game after being hit by a pitch. He then stole second, and scored the winning run on one of two base hits by Paul Brown. After starting the season slowly, losing three of their first four games, Blyth finished strong compiling a 12 win, three loss, two tie record, giving them first place overall in the Huron County Fastball League. Blyth entered the first round playoffs against the Belgrave Blue Devils Monday at 8:30 in Blyth. The Brussels Bulldogs finished the regular season last week, playing Blyth Decorating Aug. 7 and the Zurich Rangers, Aug. 8. Against Blyth, Dave Smith threw a three hitter in a losing cause as Blyth won one to nothing. Monday night against the Rangers the Bulldogs went on a hitting rampage, beating Zurich 22 to 6. Greg Mulvey and Andrew McCutcheon both went five for Squirts win It was a thorough trouncing from the home team, when Seaforth Squirt Boys vi.sitcd Belgrave on Aug. 9 and were sent home with a 10-1 loss. Through four innings pitcher Justin Campbell and the team shut down the visitors, while scoring in every turn at bat. Crossing in the first were Campbell, Craig Marks, Kevin Hopf, David Wray, Myron Hussey and Rick Buchannan. The second inning runs were scored by Marks and Hopf, while in the third and fourth it was Jeffrey Beyers- bergen and David Wray, respec­ tively, crossing the plate for the home team. Taking turns behind the plate for Belgrave were Hussey, Hopf and Wray. Mites earn B Champion. The Brussels girls ended a great season with nine wins and two losses. The two losses were the first two games they played in May. They went undefeated until the year-end tournament in Belgrave Aug. 13 and 14. Due to rain on Saturday the girls had to finish the tournament Sunday losing only one game to Belmore, which put them in the B division. The girls ended up playing four games straight (six and a half hours of straight baseball) to defeat Gowanstown in the championship game 21-0. The tired team consists of Brittany Kellington, Megan Bragg, Lesley Pepper, Rachael Speers, Courtney Sallows, Nicole White, Jodi Sellers, Brooklyn Wheeler, Nicole Mastnak, Kendall Jutzi, Kimberly Acton, Laurie Prior and Amber Park. The Bulldogs finished the regular season al 1 1 wins and five losses, which puls lhe.m second in lhe Huron County Fastball League, one point ahead of lhe Brussels Tigers. Playoffs started this past Sunday nighl againsl lhe Clinton Selects. Dave Smith pitched six innings with 1 1 strikeouts but came out with no decision as the score was lied one to one with Greg Wheeler scoring the only Bulldog run on a wild pitch. The game went to extra innings with Clinton scoring in lhe tenth on a sacrifice fly, but lhe Bulldogs responded with Andrew McCut­ cheon hitting a double then getting home with a single from Greg Wheeler and another from Dave Smith. Then in the 11 th Jerry Bremner scored on John Miners' single to win lhe game. This series continues in Clinton Wednesday night al 8 p.m. The Bulldogs are also in action Saturday in the Clinton Tourna­ ment, where they lost their opener last weekend to Chesley 7 to 6. <0 ) Nick & Joan Whyte are proud to announce the graduation of their daughter Crystal Joan from the Australian Catholic University when she received her Teacher s Certificate.
