"We are hoping that by doing this
it's going to refine the treatment of
cancer. The hope of a cure is
always the main goal, but this takes
lime and money," Mrs. Lcishman
said. "If for now, by doing this run,
it will help make treatments easier
for patients, young and old, so they
are able to continue on as normally
as possible, that is a start."
Terry Fox died June 28, 1981,
eight and a half months after cancer
was discovered in his lung. In the
143 days of his run, which began
April 12, 1980 and ended Sept. 1,
he covered 5,564 kilometres. He
raised over $24.1 million.
For his efforts he was awarded
the Companion Order of Canada,
the Lou Marsh Trophy of Canada,
Outstanding Athlete, Canadian of
the Year for 1980 and 1981 and an
Honourary Member of the Canadi
an Sports Hall of Fame.
