Mappy 50 th Anniversary Blanche & Jack Bowes on August 12 From sister Lila By John Schedler One of the great things about movies as either art or entertainment is that they are accessible to everyone regardless of a person’s social standing or income. Rightly described by any as "the liveliest art" people can, and do debate the merits of their favourite movies sometimes with a passion usually reserved for much weightier matters. One of the most discussed and important filmmakers of this century is Orson Welles whose "Citizen Kane" (1941) has been chosen by many critics and film fans as the greatest movie of all time. But, from the very beginning of his film career Welles' artistic genius was no match for the Hollywood wolves who resented this boy wonder from New York. Another stumbling'block. to Welles' future career was newspaper tycoon William Randolph Hearst whose private and public life was the subject of "Citizen Kane". Hearst newspapers refused advertising for the film and Hearst himself almost succeeded in having RKO withdraw and destroy the movie. In the final analysis, even though "Citizen Kane" was a critical success it was a flop at the box office which is the biggest sin in the movie business and it set the stage for Welles' fall from grace in Hollywood. The stories of Welles^ career and films are now legendary, from the mutilated masterpiece "The Magnificent Ambersons" to "The Third Man", "The Stranger", "Touch Of Evil", "Macbeth", "Othello", "The Lady From Shanghai" and many more. Of the five incomplete features he left to posterity the most fascinating is "It's All True" (1943) **** (Paramount), a partially reconstructed version of a film Welles was sent to Brazil to make as a good will gesture. The trip was unfortunately a disaster as the Brazilian government's attitude cooled to the film and worst of all, RKO changed management and pulled the plug. Welles spent the next four years in a fruitless search for financing to finish the movie. Much of the footage that Welles shot was presumed lost until a few years ago when numerous reels of negatives were discovered in the Paramount vaults. While, despite this discovery, we still don't have a complete film, what docs survive has been pieced together by a team of knowledgeable film scholars including Richard Wilson one of the production's original crew members. Framed as a documentary, "It's All True" is a fascinating look at a great artist and a lost masterpiece. Highly Recommended. (Rated G). Other new releases on store shelves this week include "Beethoven's 2nd" **1/2 (MCA/Universal - $26.95) an O.K. family comedy starring Charles Grodin and a house full of St. Bernard puppies. (Rated PG). Paul Hogan is back in "Lightning Jack" **1/2 (HBO) an aimiable if somewhat slow moving western comedy about a bumbling bank robber and his mute partner (Cuba Gooding Jr.). (Rated PG-13). Richard Gere stars in "Intersection" ** (Paramount), a dull and lifeless drama about a successful architect who must choose between his wife (Sharon Stone) and his mistrpss (Lolita Davidovich). YAWN.'! (Rated R). "The Ref' * (Touchstone) has a funny premise about a thief who takes a bickering couple hostage and is driven crazy by them and their nasty relatives. Unfortunately humour gives way some of the most foul and unnecessarily bad language 1 have heard in a movie since "Cliffhanger". Truly Awful! (Rated R).
