Like the chicken or the egg it’s hard to say who got here
first, the runner or the ball, but with the Auburn first
baseman's heel off the bag the player from the Seaforth
team looks like he just might have made it. The two teams
were part of the action during the ball tournament held in
Blyth this past weekend.
Squirts lose
On Aug. 3 Belgrave Squirt Boys
travelled to Winthrop where they
were handed an 8-6 loss by the host
team.
Winthrop jumped ahead in the
first inning with four after holding
Belgrave scoreless in the top half.
In the second Belgrave narrowed
the lead to one when Kevin Hopf,
Myron Hussey and Tom Mullin
crossed the plate. Winthrop
answered back with two of their
own taking a solid lead once again
in the home half.
A David Wray homerun capped
off a three run third for Belgrave
with Jeffrey Beyersbergen and
Justin Campbell scoring the other
two. To make things even better
the Winthrop team was held to their
six runs making the game a tie to
this point
Unfortunately, the home team’s
defense shut down the Belgrave
squad over the next two innings
while notching two for themselves
in the fourth to claim the two run
victory.

Tigers end schedule with win
The Blyth PeeWee soccer team
travelled to Goderich Aug. 6 for the
annual tournament.
In the last four regular season
games, things had not gone well
with three losses and a tie.
The first game Saturday involved
a re-match with Lucknow, the
strongest team in regular season
play and whose only loss had been
to Blyth 3-1. They took a 1-0 lead
in the first half, but two second half
goals by Mike Courtney, assisted
by April VanAmersfoort and
Amanda Howson, gave the Blyth
team a 2-1 win.
The next game against Clinton
led to a scoreless tie after overtime,
despite some excellent chances for
both sides. This necessitated a
shoot out - but five shots each, it
was still tied 2-2, leading to a
single shooter situation.
VanAmersfoort again came
through by neatly sinking her shot
in the left lower corner. The
Clinton shooter was not so lucky,
giving Blyth the 3-2 win. Zoey Onn
responded well under the shootout
pressure keeping them in the game
with two good saves.
The third match pitted them
again against Lucknow and despite
excellent play by all, they lost 2-0,
giving them second place for the
second year in a row.
Through the season, the high
scorer was Mike Courtney with six
goals, MVP was Greg Blok (full
back), Most Enthusiastic player
was Jennifer Black (half), and Most
Improved Players were Becky
Morrison and Jill Walden.
The Tigers completed their
Huron County fastball schedule
with a 10-3 win over the Zurich
Rangers Friday night in Brussels.
Mike Watson and Doug Conley
each batted three for three while
Murray Pipe enjoyed a four RBI
game.
The Tigers have games to be
played against Bayfield and the
Seaforth Bears, but the results are
in doubt as the league's playoff
meeting was scheduled for last
night.
The Tigers participated in the
annual Brussels Fastball Tourna
ment losing twice on the Civic
Holiday weekend.
Game one saw Todd Uhrig pitch
five perfect innings, striking out
seven, before the Sebringville
Indians rallied in the sixth for a 6-4
win. Murray Pipe batted three for
four while Doug Shaw was two for
three.
In game two, the Lieury Jets
scored six third inning runs for a
12-9 win. Ron Strome was three for
four, including two home runs, and
finished the tournament with seven
RBI's.
KW Pride was the Brussels
Tournament champion defeating
the Mitchell Mets 6-5 in the final,
while Sebringville ANAF edged
the London Gators 4-3 in the
consolation.

Awesome Atom Apples end play
Well the soccer season has come
to an end and it seems that now
soccer is through, the summer is
ending too.
The Atom Apples had a rough
season but everyone seemed to
have a good time. Coach Hillie said
she did for the most of it. B.J.
Cullen was the other coach.
The Apples fought hard to win
but were mostly outnumbered by
the other team. This seemed to be
the major problem throughout the
season.
The players were keen but with a
small team they just couldn't keep
up with the teams that had seven or
eight substitutes. I sure hope all of
them come back next year because
I enjoyed coaching them and
getting to know them. They're a
great bunch of kids, said Mrs.
Chamney.
The team consisted of Amanda
Bailey, Wes Beacom, J.C. Beacom,
Amanda Cook, John George, Jesse
Hakkers, Kyle Irvin, Justin Irving,
Teague Onn, Jenny Ritchie and
Cole Stewart.
Special thanks to these squirt
players Duane Buffinga, Tasha
Cook, Danny Cullen, Alison
George, Nick Packer, Kerissa Van-
Amersfoort, who helped us out a
lot in games. Mrs. Chamney
appreciates the support and help of
the parents all through the season.
"It was great," she said.
Belgrave Squirts take loss 9-6
Tuesday, Aug. 2 the Brussels
Squirt Boys 82 team had their

inning, when Patrick Gilkes stole
home. Belgrave responded with a
run in their half of the inning, when
Myron Hussey came home on a hit
by Justin Campbell.
Brussels jumped ahead in the
second, however scoring three
more when Jason Armstrong, Tim

of the inning, when Rick Buchanan
was brought home by a Jason Fear

Brussels added to their lead with
four in the third. Andrew Garland,
Tyler Bragg, Armstrong and
Harrison all scored runs. In the
bottom half of the inning, Belgrave
scored four of their own, when
Justin Campbell, David Wray, Tom
Robinson and Rick Buchanan
scored on six straight hits.
Brussels added one more in the
fourth, however, when Nathan
Garland doubled in Andrew

the win.
Joshua Gropp held the pitching
duties for Brussels, scattering two
walks and one strikeout. Justin
Campbell and Craig Marks pitched
for Belgrave and shared 11 walks
