THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JULY 27, 1994 Belgrave Squirts take loss Sacrifice Matt Cameron may have been out at first, but he got the runner home for Brussels in this Ontario Rural Softball Association game on Sunday between Brussels Squirts and Hickson. It was a close game in the early innings but Hickson eventually edged ahead for the win. Brussels returns the visit Wednesday night in this best of three series. Brussels Squirt 82s battle 83s Last Friday evening, the two Brussels Squirt Boys teams squared off for their final regular season game against each other. The 82 team took the lead in the bottom of the first when Tyler Bragg, after being hit by a pilch, used some aggressive base running to reach home. The score remained that way until the lop of the third when the 83 team look the lead. After Matt McCall was walked, Philip Leger laid down a bunt that moved him to second. Robbie Kerr then walked. More aggressive base running and a sacrifice by Brian Oldfield brought them home. The 82 squad responded with two of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Jason Armstrong hit his fifth home of the season, bringing home Paul Hunter who was one of five players loaned from the Mite team. The 82 team added to its lead in the fifth, when Malt Cameron and Armstrong crossed the plate on hits by Armstrong and Patrick Gilkes. The defense remained strong, and the 82 team held on for a 5-2 win. Brian Oldfield pitched for the 83 squad, scattering four walks and six strikeouts. Joshua Gropp pitched for the 82 team, combining seven walks with two strikeouts. In addition to Hunter, Mile help was supplied for the short-staffed 82s by Robbie Semple, Evan Horst, Chris Walker and Dan Cameron. On Sunday afternoon, the Brussels Squirt Boys played the first game of their Ontario Rural Softball Association playoff against Hickson. This team entered in WOAA as well, consists of players from both the 82 and 83 teams. Brussels took the lead. Michael Walker, after reaching base on a walk, scored on a sacrifice by Robbie Kerr. After Hickson took the lead in the top of the fourth, Brussels scored three in he fourth. Bragg, Armstrong and Oldfield scored on three hits and a walk. The lead was not to last, however, and Hickson pulled out a 7-4 win. Oldfield and Mark Kroll split the pitching duties for Brussels, sharing seven walks and six strikeouts between them. Coaches said that though the boys failed to gain a victory, they should be proud of the effort they made. Strong defense and aggressive base running made this a very entertaining game for all who attended. The second game will be held in Hickson on Wednesday night. On Monday evening the Brussels 82 Squirt Boys and Belgrave Squirt Boys met for the first time in regular season play. Belgrave jumped to a quick four- run lead in the first inning. Craig Marks singled, then was followed by Justin Campbell, Kevin Hopf and Jason Fear who reached base on walks and crossed home plate before the inning ended. Brussels countered with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Joel Kellington, who walked and Matt Cameron, who singled, came home on a double by Patrick Gilkcs. The score remained that way until the third inning, when Belgrave added to their lead. Campbell walked and came home ' on a single by Hopf. Mark Kroll walked and was followed by a Kellington single. The two came home on a Nathan Garland homerun. Brussels look the lead in the fourth. Ryan Mawhinney hit his first homerun of the season. Robbie McKercher who singled, came home on base hits by Andrew Garland and Kroll. Belgrave got one more run when Marks came home on hits by Campbell and Hopf, but the Brussels defense held on for a 7-6 win. Justin Campbell pitched for Belgrave scattering four walks and two strikeouts. Mark Kroll pitched for Brussels, splitting eight walks and eight strikeouts. Scoring for Belgrave were Myron Hussey with two including a homerun, David Wray and Jimmy McCracken. On July 19 they played an exhbi­ tion game with the Brussels 82 team and trounced the visitors 17-6. Tim Robinson scored in the first, then David Wray and Rick Buchan- nan notched on two more in the second. Brussels got on the scoreboard in the third with two, when Matt Cameron and Andrew Garland came home. A seven run home half, however, extended the Bel­ grave lead. Crossing the plate were Justin Arkell, Jimmy McCracken, Craig Marks, Justin Campbell, Kevin Hopf (homerun), David Wray and Tim Robinson. Brussels responded with two 2 Brussels girls prepare for provincial ball tourney Two Brussels girls are preparing for the upcoming provincial quali-' fying novice ball tournament to be held in Chatham next week. Kara Pepper and Amber Ruttan, members of the Seaforth Novice II girls fastball team, will travel to the provincial trials. July 21 Belgrave travelled to play Wingham Red and were trounced 15-1. Belgrave's only run was scored by Tim Robinson in the sixth. Justin Campbell pitched the first three innings with Kevin Hopf and Craig Marks sharing the last three innings. The Novice girls have competed against larger centre teams such as Aurora, Guelph, London, Niagara Falls and Whitby, earning a 20 and 0 record this season. Coach Georgina Reynolds says the players come from other teams and are missing regular season games to prepare for the provin­ cials. "They have to be committed" to the team, she says.
