Leaving Toronto on the 401 passing the Big Apple made one think of New York; and further along the Wet Lands made you think you had reached Holland with its irrigation ditches. The giant dome of St. Joseph's Oratory appeared on the hill, its height being 83 feet; in memory of Brother Andrd. At Three Rivers, where three tributaries of the St. Maurice River meet, they turned north to Shawi.n- igan Falls which produces hydro. Flat roofs and outside stairways are condemned here. She weighs five tons and is 29 feet tall. They reversed back to Rose du Nord. In Tadoussac they went whale watching on a "tall" ship which was all open deck. They travelled on to Sept. Isles where David Miller, formerly of Brussels, worked for years. They boarded a train and on the 10 hour ride saw much forest, rivers, falls, fish ladder and rocks. Reaching Labrador City they went by miners' bus to Wabush where they stayed three nights. In the meantime, the bus driver was driving back to Baie Comeau and up 350 pi|es on the new "Road to Freedom1' which was rough like the road to Alaska was at first. He unfortunately had a flat tire, put out flares hoping a black bear didn't appear. Finally, he saw lights and stood in the centre of the road. Being as he was in bus driver's attire, the vehicle stopped and took him to Labrador City. There were very few places to get gas on the 350 mile stretch. In Wabush the travellers visited the open mine iron ore factory. In Labrador City there was a museum and a church with cement roof. They then went into Quebec to the Fermont City with its one mile long mouth wall which protects them in winter. They were taken to the open iron ore mine . Trucks and machines were very large and a large tire cost $18,000. Gagnon is a ghost city which was bulldozed down when the mine went broke. Travelling the Road to Freedom they reached Baie Cornea and Tadoussac again, and visited the home made bread bake ovens at Saint Irencd. Quebec City with its famous statues and upper and lower towns, is magnificent. They entered the Easter Town ships and at Drummondville, one of the travellers on the tour fell, broke her glasses and her cheek. She was left in the hospital to fly home to St. Thomas. The tour continued across the Ottawa River into Quebec to the Montibello establishment. It is a huge area where Louis Joseph Papineau of the Rebellion of 1937 built a manor home, church, school and stable. It is beautiful, full of French articles, Mrs. Martin said. The Monibello has boating and cabins. It is a huge building built of logs, somewhat like the hotel at Yellowstone near Old Faith Geyser. There were 42 people on board and all had an informative vacation, Mrs. Martin said. The VHtege of Brussels began a corrugated cardboard recycling program on June 1,1994.
