Crawling Gator As the ball goes past the Clinton Dupuis' first baseman, the member of the Walton Gators goes head over heels onto the bag amidst a cloud of dust. The two teams met up in the Brussels Bulls Men's slowpitch tournament this past weekend. Belgrave Squirts split Brussels Mosquitoes lose 2 Wednesday evening at the Listowel Rotary Park, the Brussels Mosquitoes played to a tie against the home team. Playing positions well and relaying passes down the field, resulted win the first goal of the game for Brussels scored by Gerald Bowles, assisted by Josh Acton and Paul Albers. Listowel came back and tied up the game with a goal scored by Ryan Taylor. The game became very intense with several scoring attempts by both teams, until Listowel finally broke through with a goal scored by Steve Petlapiece. Brussels came back with great determination and produced the goal to tie the game Tigers9 G. Pipe, 3 RBI game Sunday night the Brussels Tigers gave up seven second inning runs in losing 7-4 to the Bulldogs. The loss gives the Tigers a 7-4 won-loss record while the Dogs improve to 8-2. Offensively Gary Pipe had a three RBI game including a fourth inning home run. A week ago Monday an eight run third inning led the Tigers to a 13-3 win over the Seaforth Tigers. Ron Strome batted four for four including a home run. Wednesday the Tigers six game winning streak came to an end with a 6-1 loss in Clinton. Doug Shaw Brussels Squirt Boys 82 down Winthrop 18-11 On Monday evening, the Brussels Squirt Boys 82 had a rematch against the Winthrop team that had beaten them earlier in the season. The game did not start well for the home team when Winthrop scored seven runs in the top of the first inning. Feeling down, but knowing they were not out the boys responded with six runs of their own, beginning with a double by Joel Kellington. He then crossed the plate on Nathan Garland's homerun. Patrick Gilkes walked, and moved to second on Jim Harrison's single. Gilkes crossed the plate when Ryan Mawhinncy's grounder and a walk to Robbie McKcrchcr brought him home. The three base runners were then cashed in on Jason Armstrong’s double. The hitting barrage continued in the bottom of the second. After Winthrop scored two runs in the by Jillian Houston assisted by Kosta Melinkovic and Marc Fischer. Great defense work by Bronwin Dunbar and Christa Smith. Mike Smith played a strong game in goal. Team members are: Ashley Gropp, Karen Terpstra, Christa Smith, Missy McLellan, Jillian Houston, Cassey Cochrane, Ben Martin, Greg Clary, Cody Nichol, Marc Fischer, Paul Albers, Adam Albers, Josh Acton, Gerald Bowles, Kosta Melinkovic, Bronwin Dunbar. The Mosquitoes travelled to Kincardine to take part in the Legion Zone C-l Soccer Tournament. Saturday, June 25. doubled home Todd Uhrig for the only Brussels run. Friday night the Tigers opened the Wroxeter Tournament with a 5-3 loss to the Bluewater League's first place Clifford 4 Aces. Ken Higgins was three for three while Doug Conley cleared the left field fence to give the Tigers a 3-2 third inning lead. The Tigers had the winning run at home plate with none out in their last at bat but were unable to score. Saturday morning the Tigers were eliminated from tournament action with a 6-4 extra innings loss to the Milverton Magnums. Kevin top Mark Kroll singled and Andrew Garland walked. They were cashed in on Joshua Gropp's homerun. After that, Kellington singled and came home once again, on a Garland homerun. Malt Cameron then singled and he and Gilkes, who had walked, scored on a single by Mawhinney. In the third inning, highlighted by a Nathan Garland triple and a Cameron single, Kellington, Garland, Nathan Armstrong, Kroll and Andrew Garland crossed home plate. The defense was able to hold on with some stellar plays and the boys pulled out an 18-11 victory. Andrew Garland and Mark Kroll split the pitching duties for Brussels, combining for four walks and one strikeout. This was by far the best game for the team to date as they continue to improve with each outing. Their next home game is against the Brussels 83 team on July 22. The rainy weather and the muddy field proved to be Brussels undoing. Brussels first game was against Seaforth, which resulted in a 5-1 Seaforth victory. Gerald Bowles scored for Brussels. The second game was against Clinton. With cold temperatures and soaked uniforms, the team couldn’t seem to mount an attack. Final score was 3-1 with the Brussels goal being scored by Gerald Bowles. The Brussels Mosquitoes was sponsored in the tournament by the Brussels Legion . The team also sports new uniforms courtesy of the Brussels Optimists. Kellington reached base on all four attempts while Tim Fritz was three for four. Again the Tigers had the winning run in scoring position late in the game but could not capitalize. The Tigers' next home game is Friday night at 8:30 against Blyth. ATTENTION LANDOWNERS CURB Program Grants Available The goal of the CURB (Clean Up Rural Beaches) Program is to reduce bacterial and phosphorus water pollution in rivers and at swimming beaches. Grants are available to landowners for the repair or replacement of faulty private septic systems. The farm practices and structures listed below also qualify. Eligible Items Grant Rate Grant Ceiling -manure storages 50%$12,000 -milkhouse waste disposal systems 50%$5,000 -fencing livestock from streams and rivers 75%$10,000 -private septic systems 50%$2,000 This program is targeted at agricultural and rural residential areas located upstream of swimming beaches. Financial assistance is limited to those applicants who are polluting watercourses. Projects with the greatest potential to improve water quality will be given priority for funding. The visitors jumped out to a first inning lead when Tim Robinson scored. Seaforth rebounded with two runs in the second and added four more before the Belgrave boys could put another mark on the scoreboard. Ricky Buchannan crossed the plate in the top of the fifth to bring the score to 6-2 for Seaforth. With three additional runs in the bottom of the inning, Seaforth took the victory, 9-2. On July 5, the Belgrave boys hosted Wingham with a much more favourable result. With the help of a homer by Midgets girls earn 17-13 win In a hard fought and hard hitting game on July 4, the Brussels Midget girls ball team took on the visitors from Monkton. The visitors quickly earned a four run lead in the top of the first, but the home town girls retaliated with six runs of their own. By the end of the second inning the game was all tied up at seven. The Monkton squad got six runs across which forced the Brussels girls to double their score to take the lead. They improved upon that by notching 10 runs in the bottom of the third. The game was concluded due to the time constraint with the Brus­ sels team earning a 17-13 victory. Tricia Zehr pitched for the home team and Rebecca Dauphin slugged a home run in the high scoring game. Kevin Hopf in the third, Belgrave took the visitors 13-7. Other runs were scored by Tim Robinson (three), David Wray, Mike Campbell, Curtis Knight (two), Craig Marks, Justin Camp­ bell (two), Jason Fear and an addi­ tional one by Kevin Hopf. Graduation Katherine Marie Van Lammeren, daughter of Louis and Betty Van Lammeren, Kitchener, graduated on May 26, 1994 from St. Jerome’s College, University of Waterloo with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English.
