By Konrad Wernham
We came, we saw, we stayed.
We came when? 1985.
We saw what? A huge brown
building.
We stayed where? Grey Central
School.
Who were we? Eighteen original
little scholars by the names of Anne
Marie, Andy, Annie, Amy, Clint,
Christina, Cynthia, David, Holly,
Kelly, Kirk, Konrad (me), Phillip,
Steven Young, Steven Smith, Ron
and Vanessa.
We were first introduced to each
other by our teacher, Mrs.
Whitmore, in kindergarten.
What an awesome place! A
sandbox indoors, toys and more
toys, and at the end of all this fun,
we even received an official
document called a Student
Achievement Form and report card.
We were marked S - for satis
factory, N - needs improvement.
Looking over my report card I
came to the conclusion that as long
as we all recognized basic shapes,
showed control of our large and
fme muscles, showed an interest in
books and became aware that there
was rhythm, beat and melody
surrounding us, we all passed
together into the next grade,
Grade 1.
Here Mrs. Richmond gently but
firmly taught us that more than just
an interest in books was needed to
pass out of this class. We actually
had to learn about books through
the words, not the pictures. This
was called reading.
Moving on to even bigger
challenges in Grade 2, we split into
two classes, some with Mrs.
Martin, others Mrs. Starkey.
Although in two different classes,
the message was still the same,
1 + 1 = 2, 9 + 8=17 and you better
think fast and write quickly if you
want the reward of a smelly sticker
or smiley face.
Grade 4 brought us back together
as a complete class under the
scientific mind of Mr. Perrie
(maybe he was the mad scientist in
disguise).
Also joining us were new faces,
Brad, Haley, Leanne, Jessie,
Matthew, Corey, Chris, Patricia
and later on we welcomed Jeff,
Rob and Chris.
Mrs. Bailey and Mrs. Gillies in
Grade 5 taught us more
responsibility and how to cope in
the senior hall, and Miss Doig in
Grade 6 joined her love of sports
into our studies to make it a fun
learning experience.
Mrs. Whitmore again had the
pleasure of our company in Grade 7
when she escorted us on the
memorable trip to Quebec where
we would use the skills of parlez
vousing francais which had been
taught to us over the years by
Madame Colquhoun.
This brings us to the last year -
Grade 8 and Mr. C., a man of many
words and sayings, who took a high
spirited class and maybe sometimes
over-zealous students and equipped
us with knowledge, made poets out
of us, and prepared us for the "big
one" - High School.
And not one grey hair. Great job
Mr. C.!
Then there's the "head of the
school". Although we went through
three other principals, Mr. Axtman,
Mr. Whitley, Mr. Tessier, you hung
in there Mr. Statia, and you have a
few grey hairs.
Thank you Mr. Statia for all the
good advice and wonderful
morning greetings. Those will be
lasting memories.
And to our parents who
volunteered services to make our
school more productive, who
encouraged when we failed and
who praised when we achieved,
thank you.
To all those teachers at Grey who
participated in our education, you
lit the spark of knowledge. Now it
is our responsibility to learn and
learn and keep the flame growing.
And to all my classmates, we are
the graduates of 1994, let us be
proud of who we are, where we
came from and where we are going.
To close this chapter in our life, 1
would like to read a poem by an
Author Unknown.
Through this toilsome world alas
Once and only once 1 pass;
If a kindness, I may show,
If a good deed I may do to a
suffering fellow man,
Let me do it while I can.
No delay, for it is plain
I shall not pass this way again.
Thank you.
