Blyth Mosquitoes win B title S ports I z Blyth PeeWee Soccer team wins 2, loses 1 There was great soccer talent displayed at the Legion Mosquito soccer tournament in Kincardine on Saturday, June 25. With a select squad of 15 players, the Mosquito soccer team set out for Kincardine at 6:45 a.m. under wet, dreary weather conditions. Blyth's first game got underway at 9:15 against a strong Goderich Select team. Blyth fell behind 4-0 in the first half. With a pep talk at half time, Blyth came out very strong in the second half. Goderich notched another but Blyth got a break on a hand ball in the crease for a penalty kick which Jeremy Van Amersfoort took to beat the keeper to make the final score 5-1. Blyth’s second game was at 1:15 against Lucknow. Knowing this team to be of equal calibre, they were keen to get the game underway. It took Blyth a while to get started but once they did, they couldn't be stopped. The 82s defeated their hometown opposition in a well-played game. Brussels Squirts 82s beat 83s June 27 the two Brussels Squirt Boys teams squared off in an enter­ taining and well-played game. The 82 team jumped out to a six- run lead in the first inning when Ryan Mawhinney, Jason Arm­ strong, Mark Kroll, Andrew Gar­ land, Joshua Gropp and Joel Kellington crossed the plate on the side line and to the middle to David Ansley, who in turn set up Melissa Rammeloo, who beat the keeper at close range. Greg Cullen and Ansley were responsible for setting up John Eric for his first of the game with a beautiful left foot shot to put Blyth ahead 2-0. The third was a whole team effort as Ashley Howson, Julie Ritchie, Cullen and Ansley outran, out manoeuvered the opposition to set up Pardys again for his tricky left foot shot. In the second half they continued to play well to shut down the opposition. Blyth won 3-0 and went on to play Clinton for the B final. At 3:15 the two teams took to the field under very wet conditions. Giving it their all and with good smart plays, Blyth got their first goal well into the first half. Van Amersfoort stepped around a few players and with a long shot beat the keeper. Pardys set up Van Amersfoort for his second of the three walks, three hits and a hit batsman. The 83 team responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning, when Robbie Kerr was knocked in on Brian Oldfield's The 83s scored once more in the fourth when Oldfield came home, Continued on page 10 game. He again scored unassisted for a hat trick. In the second half, Blyth controlled the game. Pardys and Van Amersfoort assisted Cullen for a nice tip in goal. Clinton came back to get their lone goal of the game, but Blyth replied as Aaron Baker, after several goal scoring chances, finally put one in assisted by Ansley and Van Amersfoort. Blyth was awarded the B championship trophy and each team member received a medal. Special mention to Melissa Rammeloo for good goal keeping, Jamie Black, Jud Hakkers, and Tammy Walker for solid defense. Van Amersfoort, Peter Nonkes, and Ashley Howson played well as half backs. Ansley, Elisha Courtney, Julie Ritchie, Jennifer Godfrey, Ashley Rammeloo, Baker, Cullen and Pardys played great offensively. Blyth showed great skill, effort and sportsmanship. Congratulations team! Tigers win Wednesday night in Seaforth, Brussels Tiger Pete Exel singled home Brian TenPas to break a sixth inning tie enroute to a 7-2 win over Coops Sports. TenPas batted four for four while Doug Shaw's pinch hit single started a four run seventh inning. Upcoming games include Monday in Seaforth, and Wednes­ day in Clinton. The Tigers' next home game is tentatively scheduled for Sunday in Brussels depending on their success in the Wroxeter Tournament. Blyth Squirts soccer begins The 1994 soccer season for the Blyth Squirts has begun. They have a large group of children out to play this year. They played a very hard game against the Clinton Squirts last Thursday, but came up a little short. The team played with good Continued on page 10 PeeWees thump Wallace 10-2 In Pee Wee soccer action Monday night, Brussels dropped Wallace 10-2. The win improved Brussels' record to four wins and one loss. Scoring for Brussels was Corey Newman, with four goals to give him 12 in the year. Also scoring were Kirk Baillie with two goals, David Proulx with two goals, Terry Nichol with one goal and Mike Albers with the other goal. It was Brussels' best effort yet. The Pee Wee soccer June schedule finished off with three games, two wins and one tie. On June 15 they travelled to Lucknow to meet an as then undefeated Lucknow for the first time this season. As their team had only 10 players present, Blyth agreed to play 10 a side. Scoring opened early on a Mike Courtney goal from halves Jeff Cowan and Becky Morrison. This was followed by a long boot in by Jennifer Black from a Mike Ansley throw-in. Later Gowan, the centre half, notched his own point from a Greg Blok throw-in. Lucknow got on the board with one goal in the second half to finish the game, 3-1 for Blyth. Playing the first game against Goderich B the next week, the team was not so fortunate, losing by a score of 4-0, despite some excellent scoring opportunities by the forward line and competent defense by Blok and by Shawna Walker. The players rebounded, however, in the last June game with another 3-1 win, this time over Clinton. The score stayed tied until the last part of the second half when, despite immense Clinton pressure, Blok was able to complete play near the net after passes from Ansley and Courtney. The two Mikes worked with Pauline Blok to net the final point, Pauline putting a long cross from outside right to Ansley, who fed the ball into Courtney for the counter. Practices will resume again on Saturday, July 9. The top scorers to date are Jeff Cowan and Mike Ansley with three goals each.
