Bridges offer dramatic view of Maitland
Two bridges, one new, one old, offer a
dramatic view of the Maitland River south of
Auburn.
From 1885 until 1989 there was only one
way to cross the Maitland River between
Auburn and Clinton: Ball's Bridge. The
wrought iron bridge remains a favourite,
even today, for artists and people seeking a
scenic route to Benmiller, but in the past
couple of decades people like truckers and
farmers with wide equipment had less than
lovely things to say about the bridge.
Finally, in 1986, plans were unveiled to
build a new bridge a mile to the south of the
old one. A study had been made on whether
to take out old Ball's Bridge and replace it
with a new one, but there were many who
didn't want to lose one of the last of the old
iron bridges. In addition, the road leading to

Ball's Bridge has a steep hill at the east end,
and winds between two scenic little lakes to
the west. To bring the road up to county
standards the road would have had to be
straightened and part of the lakes filled in.
Instead the County decided to build a
new bridge, and with it a new road. The
result is a new county highway across what
was once farm fields. People now have the
option of whizzing right through from
Londesboro to Benmiller on County Road
15 and County Road 31, or taking the slow,
scenic route across old Ball's Bridge.
The new bridge, with its clean modem
lines, has its own beauty. It sours high above
the water of the riverbed, providing a view
both upstream and downstream. It gives the
feeling of a place you travel through in a
hurry, however.
Ball's Bridge gives the feeling of a place
to linger. If you go down the hill from
The Mennonite community around St. Helens thrives doing things the old-
fashioned way. Here, a Mennonite farmer spreads manure on his fields

County Road 8, four kilometers south of
Auburn, you have little choice but to slow
down. The hill is steep leading down to the
bridge and the bridge is one lane wide so
you have to wait to make sure traffic isn't
coming from the other direction. In nice
weather you're also likely to have to dodge
fishermen or tourists leaning over bridge
railing. After you rumble acrgss the wooden
planking on the bridge deck, you're apt to
want to stop and go back yourself to gaze
down the wide river.
Further down the road you'll come to the
Little Lakes, two Kettle lakes on either side
of the road. Just past the lakes you'll come to
a stop sign. Turn left and it will take you to
County Road 15, just west of the new
bridge. If you turn left again you'll travel
over the bridge and back to County Road 8,
a couple of kilometers south of where you
started.
