Huron can meet tourist’s health needs
Everything from accountants to leisure
activities will be highlighted.
Transportation to the fair is being
organized throughout the county thanks to
volunteer drivers., Anyone wishing a ride
can contact the transportation hotline at 1-
800-387^212 or in Clinton at 482-7405.
The event, which is being sponsored by
area agencies who work with seniors, the
physically challenged and their families, will
be a unique opportunity for people to
discover the excellent service available in
the area, Ms Penner says.
Taking care of visitors
Monika Penner of Shoreline Healthco in Clinton says tourists to Huron
need not worry about medical or health needs as there are many sources
in the area from which they can rent or buy.
By Bonnie Gropp
While most of us take for granted that our
holidays will be smooth sailing there are
some for whom health and mobility control
where they go and what they do.
Monika Penner of Shoreline Healthco Inc.
in Clinton says that visitors to Huron
County, whatever the age, need not be
concerned that their health needs can't be
met. In addition to Shoreline, there are two
other businesses, Med-E-Ox in Goderich and
Professional Respiratory Home Care Service
in Clinton, which sell, repair or rent
extensive lines of health and medical
equipment.
Ms Penner says that while seniors who are
travelling will often know what their
medical needs might be, everyone should be
informed as to where to find this type of
service. "You might be healthy when you
leave your home, but accidents happen."
Tourists should know, she says, that they can
get oxygen, wheelchairs or crutches, for
example, without having to travel two hours
back to the city.
Also, she says that repairs on such things
as scooters or wheelchair tires can be done
in a reasonable length of time. Within 48
hours most products will be returned to their
owner, however Ms Penner says that when a
part has to be ordered it may take longer.
"We are then at the mercy of our supplier,"
she says, adding that in most cases a rental
can be arranged should this happen.
Like its competitors, Shoreline, which
was first established in Grand Bend four
years ago, carries a full range of health care
products from mobility to bathroom aids,
right into shelf and custom seating, designed
specifically for the client. They also have
various back supports, pillows and
treatments for sports injuries, such as tennis
elbow.
Ms Penner notes as well, that most drug
stores carry some home health care needs.
Another source of knowledge for tourists
is the comprehensive Huron Information
Directory compiled in 1993, through the
efforts and co-operation of a small group of
representatives from an extensive list of
service agencies. Information on how to
purchase a directory which lists community
organizations, government representatives,
businesses and their contacts, can be done by
contacting the Huron Community Service
Network, c/o Information and Service
Development, Box 458, Clinton, ON, NOM
1LO, or by calling (519)482-5666.
The office is presently only open on
weekdays, however, a spokesperson said that
anyone needing medical information on
Saturday and Sunday, should be able to
access it by calling a local hospital.
Ms Penner is also involved in a project
which will further enlighten seniors,
caregivers and the physically challenged of
the services, support and products available
in the county for them.
On Tuesday, June 21, a Community
Lifestyle Fair, with a focus on Health,
Wealth and Leisure is being held at the
Clinton Arena from 2 to 8:30 p.m.
"Between the drug stores and the health
stores it's all out here in Huron County.”
