In 1971 Glenyce and her husband Richard Snell left her parent's business and built their own "Old Mill" south of the village. Today Blyth has two mills and two tanneries. When Franklin and Cenetta decided it was time to slow down a bit in the late 1980s, they turned over the operation of Bainton's Old Mill to Glenyce and Richard's children, Jayne Marquis, Franklin Snell, Amanda Snell and Richard Snell Jr. so today the fourth generation of the Bainton family guides the company into its second century. Franklin and Cenetta Bainton continued to operate the Bainton Limited tannery operation. Franklin died, on the job, in 1992 and Cenetta still oversees the operation. The Baintons and the Snells, in recent years, have lived a unique life, one foot planted in the countryside and one in the fashion capitals of the world. To stay on top of the latest trends in fashions they regularly fly off to Paris or New York to take in the unveiling of new designers lines or visit trade fairs. "We have to stock in such volume that it's very important to sense the trends," Glenyce says. Jayne Marquis says that the family's long experience in the wool and leather business gives them an advantage over others in the business. When they go on buying trips they know quality in leather and wool because they've been surrounded by it all their lives. They know why there is a price difference between different types of wool or leathers. "It's what makes it so unique and so exciting to work here," she says. Although fall is the biggest season at the mills, the preparation begins in January and February with visits to Paris fashion shows and trade shows to get a feel for the colours, styles, lengths and prices for the coming years. Back in Canada they start visiting manufacturers in Montreal, Winnipeg, New York and Toronto to place orders.
