A hook, a line, the sun, the sky beckons anglers
Peace and quiet
The rivers and lakes of Huron County provide some of the best fishing
there is. The picturesque scenery is the perfect backdrop for relaxation.
A hook and a line, the sun and the sky,
the picturesque shoreline and crisp sparkling
water. For the angler, visiting Huron County
is an experience. Within a few miles are the
cool and cold water fish communities of
Lake Huron, the cold water fish of rivers and
streams and the warm water fish of smaller
inland lakes, rivers and streams.
The Lake Huron fishery consists of
species like rainbow trout, chinook and
cohoe salmon as well as yellow perch, small
mouth bass and walleye. At the mouths of
the Bayfield, Maitland and Nine Mile Rivers
is a signficant sports fishery for migratory
spawning species during mid March to the
end of May for rainbow and September to
October for chinook, salmon and rainbow.
These cold water species are found six to
10 miles offshore during the summer
months.
Yellow perch, smallmouth bass and
sunfish are taken from late spring to early
fall along the entire shoreline. Most fishing
for these species takes place on piers and at
river mouths.
During the spring, both smell and suckers
are netted along the lakeshore and in the
mouths of many streams.
The launching areas on Lake Huron are
both privately and publicly maintained, so a
launching fee may be charged. Depending
on weather conditions, small boats may be
launched in the mouth of the Nine Mile
River at Port Albert or carried over the
beach to the lake.
As much of the property is privately
owned, permission should always be
obtained.
All cold water river and stream fish
prefer water with mid-summer temperatures
of less than 20°C (68°F).
These spring fed streams are concentrated
in a belt from Bayfield, at Lake Huron
inland through to Wingham.
The warm water river and lake fish are
generally found in water where summer
temperatures exceed 20°C. Lakelet Lake,
near Clifford, Lake Wawanosh and the
Morrison Dam, as well as the main river
sections of the Maitland and Bayfield Rivers
represent the most significant areas for this
type of fishing.
Winter fishing is commonly practised on
Lakelet Lake as well as the mouths of the

The Britton House sits at 12 Church St.
Built in 1871, the large two storey house has
many Victorian decorative details despite its
Georgian proportions.
Located kitty comer from each other on
Goderich St. are the Northside United and
First Presbyterian churches. Then just a
little further east is the Pinkney House,
which was originally constructed in 1846.
Back to Main St. and north you will find
the Horthy Residence. Built in 1872, the
buff-brick home is an example of a one-and-
a-half storey centre gable, centre hall
Ontario farmhouse. This style, along with
the cottage, is becoming recognized as the
province's original vernacular architecture.
At the north end of town on the comer of
Duke and East William Streets is the
building once known as the "Crystal Palace"
because of its large crystal windows. The
Round House, built in 1902, is an example
of a two-storey octagonal exhibition hall.The
first fair was held there in September 1902
and the building is still being used as part of
the fairgrounds today.
Working back towards the park you will
come to Victoria St and St. James Roman
Catholic Church before finishing the tour at
the Cardno Music Hall and Tower. By the
end of the tour you will have passed 20
provincially designated heritage properties
and the entire Main St, which has also
received provincial designation as a Heritage
Conservation District
