The story of Aylmer Clarke, the frustrated Huron County farmer who escapes from the fast-paced modem world by retreating to his barn was first created by Mr. Johns and other actors at Theatre Passe Muraille in Toronto in the 1970s. Later Mr. Johns rewrote the play and brought it, complete with a cast that includes live cows, pigs and chickens, to the Blyth stage in 1977 and again in 1981. Mr. Johns will be updating the script to take in the concerns of Aylmer with the way the world has changed since then. The play will also feature Ms Amos as Aylmer's wife. He Won't Come In From The Barn opens June 29. Bouncing Back, by Suzanne Finlay, is the second world premiere of the season. Ms Finlay, who wrote Gone to Glory for the Festival in 1986, creates a memorable character in Kale, a feisty 80-year-old who finds herself stuck in the hospital alone and unwanted. Her 40ish daughter Brenda, who has problems of her own including a tangled love life, comes to try to straighten out her mother's affairs, including a house that resembles a disaster area. The three- character play opens July 20. The work of one of Canada's most famous writers, W. O. Mitchell will be presented for the first time on the Blyth stage when The Black Bonspiel of Wullie MacCrimmon opens as the final production of the season Aug. 3. Wullie MacCrimmon is a small town shoemaker who longs to win the Canadian curling championship. He meets O. Cloulie who promises to deliver his wish as part of a bargain. Wullie finds himself challenged to the curling match of this life. Fear, treachery and religious fanaticism conspire to defeat his team as he curls for his soul against a rink of history's most infamous villains. Mr. Mitchell's play first appeared as a short story in 1950, then as a one-act play in 1966. In 1979 the first full-length production first opened at Theatre Calgary. The play has entertained audiences in many parts of Canada since. In this, and future seasons, Ms Amos hopes to put the theatre back on a strong fooling for the Festival's third decade. After all, if an organization this big could grow in an unlikely place like Blyth, solving the problems of the past few years seems to be simple by comparison. 1° I i III i I iI i 0 Jerry & Helen Sabo Auburn 526-7759 It's Christmas Year Round You’ll find a wonderful selection of gift items ‘Doug & (fancy's (general Store • Groceries • Toys ~ Puzzles • Books - New & Used • Model Kits • Movie Rentals • Lottery Tickets ...and more 153 (Main St., (Dashwood 237-3403 * Full range of white wicker furniture, including: settee sets, rocking and occasional chairs, mirrors, tables, lamps and shelves.
