History of Bedford Hotel 98 years old
Steps of history
The lobby of The Bedford Hotel in Goderich displays the grandeur from a
time long ago. The Curry family has operated the hotel for much of its long
history and have taken pride in retaining the feel of the Victorian era.
By Janice Becker
Five generations of the Curry family have
owned and operated The Hotel Bedford on
The Square in Goderich for 57 of its 98-year
history.
"The hotel was built in 1896 and has
changed very little since that time," says
Manager Mike Lapaine.
The Hotel Bedford features four distinct
areas; the upscale restaurant, an English-
slylc pub, a night club and of course the
well-appointed guest rooms.
The dining room, Frank and Aulie's, is
named for the operators of the hotel from
1930 to 1970, Frank and Aulcen Curry.
Mr. Lapaine says the dining area has
changed very little since their day.
The room is flooded with light from
morning to midday by the expansive
windows which reach almost the full 12 foot
height to the ceiling. The dining room has a
light and airy feeling.
Though the decor of Frank and Aulie's has
maintained the old world feeling, the cuisine
is definitely contemporary. They specialize
in local cuisine such as lake fish as well as
providing an upscale menu of quality entrees
for the tourist.
For a quick drink before dinner or a
leisurely afternoon of socializing, the Duke
offers the perfect setting.
A favourite with the locals, the Duke
furnishes a roadhouse-style menu.
Mr. Lapaine says,"The Duke is always a
busy place and is open all the lime."
"An evening of high energy entertainment
can be had at Bruno's," he says.
Located across the lobby from The Duke,
the night club provides a mix of live
entertainment and video D.J.s which cater to
the baby boomer and Generation X crowd
with classic rock selections.
Even at Bruno's, a choice of atmosphere is
available. Bar stools, intimate tables and a
cozy lounge area sit next to the dance floor,
providing the right setting for any occasion.
The club is open Thursday through
