Tom Hanks won a well deserved Oscar for his performance in
Philadelphia **** (Columbia/Tristar), a compelling and heartfelt film
about an up-and-coming young lawyer who is fired from his job when he
contracts AIDS. Tom Hanks is brilliant and Denzel Washington as his
homophobic lawyer is also first rate.
Also worthy of note are co-stars Antonia Banderas, Mary Steenburgen,
Jason Robards and Joanne Woodward.
Be sure to have plenty of tissues handy. (Rated PG-13)
Also compelling is In The Name Of The Father ****
(MCA/Universal), a superb film based on the true story of Irishman
Gerry Conlon (Daniel Day Lewis), his father, other family members and
friends who are framed by British police for a pub bombing.
In The Name Of The Father was directed by Jim Sheridan (My Left
Foot, The Field) who has been described by some as "the one-man
renaissance of Irish cinema".
This film pulls absolutely no punches in its depictions of a government
so hasty to calm public outrage over the bombing that they are willing
suppress evidence and condemn innocent people for the sake of
expediency. (Rated R for language and violence.)
Another enlightening look at the British justice system can be found in
Let Him Have It**** (Columbia/Tristar) an exceptional film based on a
miscarriage of justice that caused such a public outcry that it led to the
abolition of Capital punishment. (Rated R)
The Pelican Brief ***1/2 (Warner) is a better than average thriller
directed by Alan J. Pakula and based on the best seller by John Grisham.
The plot involves a speculative legal brief by a law student (Julia
Roberts) about the assassination of two supreme court judges. Her
theory, it seems, hits a little too close to home for those responsible for
the murders, so before you know it she is a target and on the run.
Also in the cast are Denzel Washington, Sam Shepard and Robert
Culp. (Rated R)
Michael Biehn and Joanna Pacula star in Deep Red **1/2
(MCA/Universal), an interesting and fast moving sci-fi thriller about
shape shifting immortals. The villain of this film is none other than John
de Lancie (Q on Star Trek The Next Generation) who has distinguished
himself in numerous interesting supporting roles over the past year.
(Rated R)
New from National Geographic Home Video is The Last Voyage of
The Lusitania ****, which charts undersea explorer Dr. Robert Ballard's
deep-sea investigation into the ocean liner tragedy that sparked U.S.
involvement in World War I. Nearly 1,200 passengers were killed when
the ship was hit by a torpedo from a German U-boat. What caused a
second more powerful explosion sending the Lusitania to the bottom of
the sea in less than 15 minutes is still a subject of controversy to this day
and Ballard's answer to the mystery is as unexpected as it is thought
provoking.
Among the other interesting deep-sea detective works by Dr. Robert
Ballard also available from National Geographic are Secrets of the
Titanic, The Lost Fleet of Guadalcanal and Search For Battleship
Bismarck.

In the land of EVER, where
fairytales are born, a catastrophe
has occurred that threatens all who
live there. If the error is not
corrected (and soon!) there will be
an imbalance in the fabric of all
dimensions and the universe will
collapse. EVER's only hope lies in
Maria. She comes from REALITY
and journeys through EVER to find
the Staff of Grimm. Along the way
she meets all her favourite fairytale
characters (with a twist!)
