Indoor events do well Continued from page 1 entrants than in previous years. The rain started just as the parade was concluding and it drove much of the crowd home, though the teenagers were more than willing to take part in the afternoon scavenger hunt. The indoor events at the arena went "really well", says Ms McNeil. "The psychics entertained a long line of villagers wishing to have their future and fortune told and children's performer Jongerbonger was quite good," she says. "The firemen's water barrel fight had as many participants as in pre vious years, " says Diane Josling, wife of Fire Chief Paul Josling. "It was a wet event for a rainy day." Ms McNeil says, "Attendance was down for the Shriner's fish fry, but those who partook of the meal said the fish was spectacular." Saturday ended with a packed arena for the country and western dance with music provided by Gui tars and Cadillacs, a tribute to Dwight Yoakam. "The music was good and everyone had a good time," says Ms McNeil. With the sun shining on Sunday, the fishing derby at Radford's pond was a success. Diane Radford says, "The turnout was good though the fish were not biting as well as other years. The children had a lot of fun and the Blyth Legion fed a lot of hotdogs to the hungry anglers." Fourteen young people won tro phies at the derby. Ms McNeil says the Sunday afternoon entertainment provided by The Blyth Christian Puppeteers and the Christian rock group New Perceptions were both well attend ed. "Two events cancelled on Satur day, the CKNX Try Hards ball game and the hot air balloon launch, are in the process of being rescheduled for a single day event in the near future," says Ms McNeil. Van Geest's sermon entitled "The Message of the Cross" came from the scripture reading I Corinthians 1: 18-31 and the text I Corinthians 2: 1-2. Paul was sent by God to preach about the cross and the life it gives. But in Paul’s time as in today's people refused to accept the fact of God's power and purpose of events that happened. The Jews of Paul's time didn't want to believe that the one who died on the cross was the true King of the Jews, because they thought their King would be held above all people powerful and wonderful. They could not believe their King would allow the ridicule and suffering that Jesus endured on the cross. The Greeks of the time were considered the intellectuals. To their minds the events of the cross made no sense to them. So this was the type of world that Paul was sent into to preach, to make understand the power of God's love for us. In I Corinthians 21:2 Paul tells the people he does not come with eloquence or have superior wisdom. Paul knew that his preaching was a demonstration of the Spirit's power. Through this preaching the faith of man would have to be based on God’s power and not the wisdom of men. As it was in Paul's time and today the message of the cross shows man how much God loves us. Accepting the gospel of the cross in faith, it brings us peace with God and opens the road to paradise to us, Rev. Van Geest said.
