Bulls search for competitors By Jim Brown Brussels Bulls are looking for more teams to compete in their annual slo-pitch tournament. Five teams have already registered for the tourney which will be held July 8 to 10 in Brussels. Organizers are looking for a total of 16 teams in the fundraising tournament. The slopitch tournament is one of two fundraising events the Bulls are holding during the month of July. Any team interested in playing in the three-day tournament can call tournament convenor Doug Me Arter at 887-6963. The Bulls are also hosting a CHAM Video dance on Friday, July 22 at the Brussels-Morris Grey Community Centre. The Brussels Western Junior 'C Hockey League squad is also preparing for the 1994-95 season. Coach Scott Pettigrew reported that a number of players have already been contacted about attending the team's training camp. He said all players being invited to the Bulls camp, set for late August, should receive their invitation letter by July 1. "We hope to get them back by Aug. 1," Mr. Pettigrew told the Blyth Thunder beat Lucknow The Blyth Lightning Mosquito team played host to Wingham on May 30. With a full roster, Blyth was eager to get the game under way. Jeremy VanAmersfoort put Blyth up by one as Pauline Blok and Dave Ansley set him up. Aaron Baker got Blyth's second with assists going to Pauline, Melissa Rammeloo and Jud Hakkers. By the end of the first half, Wingham had also notched one goal. Blyth came out strong in the second half with lots of offense, but were rewarded only once for their efforts as Ashley Howson beat the keeper with the assists going to Aaron and Jeremy. The final score was 3-1 in favour of Blyth. The Blyth Thunder Mosquito team travelled to Lucknow for an executive last Tuesday. He said a number of players are still waiting for their acceptance from universities or colleges before committing themselves to the next hockey season. Mr. Pettigrew noted he has contacted a number of Brussels minor hockey players and their response has been positive about attending the Bulls' camp. The selection of Scott Walls in the recent OHL draft makes the minor hockey league player realize that they receive added exposure by playing for the Bulls. The coach added that a number of Bulls and Bulls' prospects have been invited to the Midwestern Junior 'Bs' Listowel Cyclones rookie camp being held in Ayton, July 23-24. "This will give us a chance to take a look at some prospective players," said Mr. Pettigrew. The Bulls have added a second assistant coach for next season. Mike Henry of Blyth will join Pettigrew and assistant coach Charlie Smith behind the bench for the 1994-95 season. He tried to get former head coach Phil Westman to return as an assistant coach, but he indicated he would be coaching the Milverton 4-Wheel Drives of the anticipated close game. This proved to be true as both teams exchanged goals in the first 15 minutes. Blyth's first goal was passed by Tammy Walker to Jeremy VanAmersfoort, who beat the keeper. John Eric Pardys and Jeremy maneuvered the ball close to the net before Julie Ritchie notched the second for Blyth. In the second half, Blyth seemed to tire as Lucknow tied the game at two all, but Blyth got a break with a penalty shot which Jeremy scored by beating the keeper on his low right side. This proved to be the winner. Later on Blyth scored the prettiest goal of the game as Jud passed the ball up the side line to Pardys, who in turn moved it up the line to a recruit Atom player, WOAA Senior 'A' Hockey League. The coach said that Mr. Westman really helped the team when he served as an assistant at the end of the regular season and the playoffs. Mr. Pettigrew said Mr. Henry has coached the Blyth Midgets the last four seasons. A goal tender when he played hockey, he does have an intermediate level for coaching, and Mr. Pettigrew said Mr. Henry wants to get his 'foot in the door' in regards to coaching. "He has good personal skills and is comfortable talking to players one-on-one," said Mr. Pettigrew. He added this would definitely be an asset for the Bulls as it looks like the team will be going with two young goalies next season. The coach added that it would also help the Bulls recruit players from the Blyth area. Bulls president Gerry Wheeler said the organization needs to consider players from Blyth as "local" players. Mr. Pettigrew said the majority of players invited to the training camp in August are from Huron and Perth Counties. "We'll be looking at a lot of players from the Howick, Blyth as well as Brussels areas," he said. Steven VanAmersfoort who maneuvered the ball forward. With the help of Pardys, Steven scored the assurance goal. The final score was 4-2 for Blyth. Again, a very enjoyable game to watch. The Thunder's June 6 game against Goderich Lions was a very rewarding game even though they lost. All the scoring was done in the first half with Goderich pulling in the lead 2-0 before Blyth came back with their lone goal scored by David Ansley. Justin Black and Jeremy got the assists. Goderich got their third, late in the first half to make the final score 3-1 for Goderich. Special mention to the keeper who made superb saves. The defense were solid as were the halfbacks. The forward line made some impressive plays. The "Old Inners" took part in the annual Blyth Minor Hockey Co-ed Slo-pitch Tournament this past weekend and came away with the 'A' championship.
