PAGE 7. 107 register for Blyth soccer The Blyth Bantam soccer season got underway on May 16 in Belgrave with St. Columban as the visiting team. This is the first year Blyth has a Bantam team which consists of 16 and 17-year-olds. St. Columban is known as a good soccer town and proved to be a match for Blyth as Blyth suffered a 4-1 loss. Terry Pardys scored the only goal for Blyth with Collin Riley and J.C. Kirk getting assists. On May 26, Blyth travelled to Newton on a wet, cold, dreary evening. This started out as a close match with Blyth getting on the scoreboard first with two goals, the first by Riley assisted by Rolf Fresenknecht, and Andrea Tigers split doubleheader The Brussels Tigers opened their Huron County fastball schedule with a Sunday night doubleheader edging Belgrave 4-3 before losing the nitecap 10-9 to the Bulldogs. Ken Higgins singled home Murray Pipe in the bottom of the seventh for the opening game win. Pipe opened the inning with a walk, moved to second on a Todd Uhrig single, then scored on a Higgins line drive down the third base line. Pipe went four for four at the plate while Pete Exel reached base two of three tries. Uhrig struck out eight Blue Devils for the win handing Belgrave their first loss after two Rammeloo. The second was scored by Darryl Shannon from Riley. Newton came back with a single which marked the first half. In the second half, Shannon scored his second of the game to put Blyth up 3-1 only to have Newton come back with their second. From there on it was all Blyth with Riley scoring twice for a hat trick. Fresenknecht popped one in on a direct free kick and Shannon scored his third late in the game. The game was much enjoyed as there was water galore to play in. Final score was 7-2 for Blyth. The next game is Wednesday, June 1 in Belgrave at 7 p.m. wins and two ties. Game two saw the Bulldogs score twice in the top of the seventh for a 10-8 lead, then hang on for the win as the Tigers had the tying and winning runs in scoring position. Doug Conley batted four for four while Ron Strome went three for four. Andrew McCutcheon reached base on all four tries as well as pitching the win for the Bulldogs, who improve to three wins and one loss. The Tigers travelled to Blyth Monday night, then meet the Walton Brewers, Monday, June 6 at the Optimist Park in Seaforth. The Blyth Mosquitoes have two teams this year. The Blyth Lightnings started their season in Clinton on May 19. A much improved Clinton squad made Blyth sit up and pay attention as they fell behind 2-0. By half time, Blyth had tied the score. Ashley Rammeloo scored first, set up by David Ansley, then Ansley got the second goal assisted by Jeremy Van Amersfoort. The score remained a 2-2 tie. On May 25, Goderich Lions came to Belgrave to take on the Blyth Lightning team. As the game got underway, Goderich proved to be an overpowering team. This remained true throughout the game. Blyth managed to come close a number of times but suffered an 8-0 loss. The Lightnings play again on May 30 and on June 16. The other Blyth Mosquito team is called Blyth Thunder. They started their season in Belgrave on May 23, also against Clinton. With the ball bouncing Blyth's way, Clinton had a hard time penetrating Blyth's defense. Blyth went ahead 2-0 as John Eric Pardys put in a good left foot on the ball to get the first goal. Jennifer Godfrey assisted. David Ansley got the second as Justin Black and Eric set him up. This was a well played game. The next game is in Lucknow in June 2. Members of the Mosquito teams are: Thunder - Jeremy Van Amersfoort, Elisha Courtney, Ashley Howson, Tammy Walker, Julie Ritchie, Jennifer Godfrey, Dianne Mason, Justin Black, MaryBcth Brigham, Adam Blair and John Eric Pardys.
