Bernice Passchier to teach English in China BERNICE PASSCHIER By Janice Becker A life-long dream has finally come true for a local woman. Bernice Passchier, daughter of Anton and Jenny Passchier of Dins- ley Street in Blyth, has been accepted by the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC, a Christian development agency) to work for them in China, as an English teach er. Bernice says she has always wanted to work for an organization which dealt with human needs and to that end, applied to MCC 10 years ago. "I have always admired their work and want to contribute in some way," she says. In the interim, she has been involved in several community assistance groups and has furthered her education. She attended Waterloo Universi ty, obtaining an English degree and Wilfrid Laurier University fora business administration degree. Most recently, Bernice has spent four years in Edmonton where she was a theatre publicist, carrying on her love for the theatre developed at the Blyth Festival while still in high school. While in Edmonton, Bernice worked tutoring immigrants and was a member of a refugee com mittee which assists newcomers. Bernice received word recently that MCC was interested in her skills as an English teacher and informed her of a need in China. On July 21, after a few weeks of language and cultural training, she will travel to Chongqing, in central China, where she will be teaching educators at the local university. Chongqing has a metro popula tion of six million, with 13 million in the entire city (almost half the population of Canada). Berhice says, "The culture shock and the isolation will be two diffi culties I will have to deal with but, I am looking forward to extraordi nary generosity shown by the Chi nese to foreigners. I only hope that I can give as much back as they give to me." They had lunch at McDonalds and visited the Gaol in Goderich. They loved the jail cells and enjoyed going through the Warden's house.
