Council voices ed. concerns Blyth councillors are responding to a letter of concern from John Clark, president of the Ontario Sec ondary School Teachers Federa tion, Huron District with concerns of their own. After hearing the letter, which asks for support for the board of education and its budget, at the May 11 meeting, Councillors Mason Bailey and Steve Sparling prepared a letter on council's behalf, which was presented at the May 26 meeting. Council's letter expresses a con cern over the "unequal and unfair method of taxation for funding edu cation. Education is a service to people and not a service to property and we therefore consider that if school taxes were not levied against property, the cost of educa tion would be more acceptable to our ratepayers." The letter also asks the Federa tion to support a recommendation which has been made to the province for a change to a fairer tax method. The deficit, increasing welfare and unemployment are issues that Blyth council feel need to be given serious consideration. "For this to be happening to us with all our resources raises some doubt in our mind as to the abilities of our man agement and how well our educa tion system prepares us for the responsibilities of the business world," the letter reads. "Unless we reverse the present trend we will probably continue to decline." Blyth council told Mr. Clark that while they agreed with the OSST- F's desire for maintenance and improvement to society, they sug gested that demands be given a Student council elect The students of Blyth PS chose the student council representatives recently. The executive for the upcoming school year are, from back left, Nathan Shannon, treasurer and Angie Walden, secretary. In front, from left, Ashley Howson, vice president and Jamie Black, president.
