The Citizen, 1994-05-25, Page 21Man gets 1 year probation A Brussels-area man was placed on 12 months probation following an appearance in Wingham's provincial court, Wednesday, May 18 on a charge of assault. Crown Attorney Bob Morris said that Brian Workman of RR2, Brus sels, was charged following an inci dent on Oct. 9 involving Rolph Huber, an acquaintance of Mr. Workman's ex-wife. Mr. Huber, who resides at RR4, Wingham, testified that on that day he was followed by Mr. Workman while driving home from Wing ham. After Mr. Workman blocked his path he pulled into Tolton Motors in Bluevale looking for "protection" as he "felt there was going to be trouble", he said. William Tolton, owner of the business, said he saw a pickup truck cut off a car, which he recog nized as Mr. Huber's. He said Mr. Huber pulled into the parking lot, then came into the dealership and asked him to witness what was going to happen. He told presiding Judge R.G.E. Hunter that he saw what appeared to be an angry exchange of words between two men, though admitted he couldn't hear what was said. Then he said he saw Mr. Workman throw coffee at Mr. Huber. The coffee was not hot and he had not been injured, Mr. Huber had said during his testimony. Another witness, Tim Tolton, also said he saw the truck cutting off Mr. Huber's car, but did not see the confrontation. Mr. Workman, who acted on his own behalf said that there had been some "feuding" between the two men but it was "nothing serious". He told Judge Hunter that Mr. Huber was planning to attend a family event and was asking him not to. "I said if he had any respect for the rest of the family he would stay away from us that night," said Mr. Workman, adding that he had thrown the coffee only after becoming angry over comments made by Mr. Huber. "This man was once a friend of mine. But I have no use for him now." Noting that that was "obvious", Judge Hunter suspended sentence and placed Mr. Workman on proba tion with the condition that he have no contact whatsoever with Mr. Huber. Mischief nets man $1,000 fine Judge R.G.E. Hunter told a man who pled guilty to mischief in Wingham's provincial court, May 18, that he was on the "borderline of going to jail". Charges were laid against Dou glas McArthur, 21, of RR1, Wing ham following an incident on Oct 9, Judge Hunter was told. Crown Attorney Bob Morris said that Mr. McArthur was one of three passengers in a car driven by his brother. They had stopped beside a van in Wingham and begun talking with the driver Jacqueline Grum- mett and her passenger. Mr. Morris said some angry words were exchanged and the McArthur vehi cle followed Ms Grummett south on Hwy 4 through Belgrave, even tually passing her. Mr. Morris said Douglas McArthur began throwing beer bot tles at the van. The third one hirthe windshield causing $411. In addition to making restitution Judge Hunter fined Mr. McArthur $1,000 and placed him on proba tion for one year. Gun charge costs man $300 A Wingham-area man pled guilty in provincial court, Wingham, May 18, to a charge of possession of an illegal firearm and possession of marijuana. Police officers found a Maverick shot gun and $400 worth of mari juana during a search at the RR1, Wingham home of Tim McArthur, 23, last November. Presiding Judge R.G.E. Hunter fined Mr. McArthur $300 for the weapon charge and $200 for the drug charge. Support local business Spend your dollars at home THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, MAY 25, 1994. PAGE 21.
