speak to UCW
about flood
The May meeting of Londesboro
UCW was held at the church on
Monday, May 16 with 20 present.
The UCW purpose was repeated.
President Brenda read the Minute
for Missions.
The program convenor, Mary
Peel showed a poster on the work
of the UCW and introduced the
guests, Sam and Thelma Dougherty,
who spoke on their work in Des
Moines, Iowa since the flood of
July 1993. Sam has spent three
weeks there and the family, one
week helping restore homes.
They showed a film, Hands
across the Border showing much of
the devastation.
They were thanked by Mary and
given a gift.
Mary Peel and Betty Millar then
led in devotions with the singing of
Hymn 149 and prayer. The
scripture was 1 Peter 8-16 read by
Mary. A poem called Hands
followed. Hymn 148 was sung.
In the business, the minutes of
the April meeting were read. Thank
yous were read from the Wood
family and the Lawson family. The
treasurer's report was given and
moved by Dorothy Tamblyn. There
is a balance of $1,723.04. Helen
Lee gave a report on the quilt
cupboard that is to be built in the
entrance of the church. Brenda read
a letter from the estate of Mary
Longman from which there is a
cheque for $1,000 to go to the
UCW. This is to be turned over to
the Living Memorial Fund.
Dorothy is to send a thank you for
this.
A letter was read from Camp
Menesetung asking for clean-up
help and cookies for the summer.
Over two million Campbell Soup
labels were collected last year with
which they were able to buy a van,
computer and VCR.
It was moved by Joan Whyte and
seconded by Yvonne Hoggart to
give Florence Cartwright $50 to
attend Westminster Weekend. It
was moved by Helen Lee and
seconded by Joan Whyte to give
the UBS $50 to help cover
expenses.
Brenda said thank you to all who
helped with the church service on
May 15, the program and lunch,
Helen for sending the cards for
May and to Betty and Ken for
taking the load of bales to
Goodwill in London.
Cards for June are to be sent by
Mary Peel. Homework for June is
to phone a member not in the group
list to tell them about the meeting
next month with speaker Susan
Hay on recycling.
June 6 is the camp Sight
Experience with Barbara Hicks as
speaker. Everyone is welcome to
attend. It was moved by Marsha
Szusz and seconded by Margaret
Wright that the UCW help any
community campers who are in
need of financial help to go to
Camp Menesetung.
Betty Hulley reported on the
bake sale and booth for the lunch
on May 21 at the school grounds.
The benediction was repeated and
lunch was served by Reta, Gail and
Elizabeth after grace was sung.

Cheerio Club plays cards
The May meeting of Cheerio
Club was held on Thursday, May
19. Members met at the Hillcrest
Restaurant at 1 p.m. for lunch then
went to the home of Laura Lyon for
the rest of the meeting and a social
time.
Ora opened the meeting. The
minutes of the April meeting were
read by Margaret Good. Edythe

Fothergill. Ushers were Brenda and

June and Ted Fothergill enjoyed
a four-day mystery trip with
Regency Tours. The hostess was
