Doon Crossroads plans event
Scouting for treats
Blyth Scout Derick Doerr looked quite pleased with the
tempting treats at the Bake Table outside Memorial Hall,
Saturday. While the cubs and scouts were busy on the
bottle drive, moms and helpers braved the chilly breezes to
staff the bake table to raise funds for the Scouting
movement.
RLSSC gives water safety tips
With warm weather around the
comer, millions of Ontarians will
be cooling off in and around water
these next months. The vast
majority will have a fun and safe
summer.
Unfortunately, some will die
accidentally and others will suffer
debilitating injuries. On average,
200 people die each year in Ontario
in water-related accidents, making
drowning the third leading cause of
accidental death.
According to the Royal Life
Saving Society Canada, most
drownings can be prevented by
following these easy-to-remember
rules - Wear a lifejacket, drive
boats sober and supervise children.
The Royal Life Saving Society is
a national, charitable organization
working to prevent drowning and
water-related injuries through
lifeguard and lifesaving training,
public education, research and
advocacy. Last year in Ontario the
Society certified more than 90,000
people in lifesaving and lifeguard
courses.
Spring is finally here and Doon
Heritage Crossroads has for months
now, been planning and preparing
for the special event "Working the
Land" which will take place
Sunday and Monday, May 22 and
23, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Hundreds of seeds from the
flower and vegetable gardens have
been carefully saved and stored
from last year as part of Doon's
own seed saving program. The soil
has been turned over and worked
by hand in preparation for the
weekend that people have
traditionally set aside to plant their
gardens.
The flower, herb and vegetable
gardens help provide the "total
atmosphere" for the homes and
farms of the turn of the century
village that Doon portrays. Many
hours of planning and work over
the winter and early spring results
in hundreds of historically correct
varieties being planted into the
gardens on the May 24 weekend.
New this year will be the 'Friends
of Doon' fundraising plant sale.
The plants being offered are drawn
from the site's vegetable and flower
gardens and include such heritage
plants as the Shoofly plant and
Mennonite Heirloom Orange
Tomatoes. The plants being offered
have been started and nurtured by
the volunteer garden staff from the
seeds they collected last fall.
Also new this year, representa
tives from the Kitchener
Horticultural Society's Master
Gardener program will be on site to
offer advice and gardening lips to
our visitors.
Enjoy a horse drawn wagon ride,
watch the blacksmith as he works
and visit with the villagers and
farmers as they begin the yearly
cycle with the planting of their
gardens.
Doon Heritage Crossroads is
non-profit living history museum
owned and operated by the
Regional Municipality of Waterloo.
