Decorating dishwashers with a personal touch
Face lift
The built-in dishwasher that blends with countertops and
cabinets is a common installation. For a distinctive look, be
a style setter and match the wallpaper already in your
kitchen, as shown here. Or, add a family touch and display
your child's artistic talents, blow up your favourite
photographs or create a collage of menus from your
favourite restaurant.

approximately six hours of sunlight
per day.
While you can place your pond
anywhere, it is not recommended to
place it directly under trees since
falling leaves can foul the water
and tree roots will make digging
difficult.
Using a heavy garden hose or a
rope, free-form your pond design to
conform to your landscaping
scheme.
When constructing your pond,
dig both a shallow area and a deep
area. Fish will feed on insects in the
shallow area, and it is the ideal
place for potted plants such as
lilies.
The deep area will provide
security for your fish and protect
them from birds and small animals.
Depending on your climate, the
deep area of your pond should be
anywhere from 24 inches to 40
inches, and the shallow area from
four inches to 12 inches.
After digging out your pond
location, line the ground with sand,
carpet padding or even old
newspapers before installing the
liner. This will protect the liner
against sharp, protruding objects
such as roots and rocks.
To create a professional look,
build rock border around your
pond, allowing the rocks to overlap
the edge of the pond by one or two
inches. You can landscape back
around the pond and even build a
patio if desired.
What kind of fish should you put
in your pond? The hardiest are
large Common or Comet goldfish.
Depending in the size of your pond,
these hardy fish will grow rapidly,
and can withstand the worst
climates. As long as the water in
your pond does not freeze to the
lowest depths, these fish can
survive the cruelest winters.
What should you do in the
winter? Nothing! After the first
frost, remove your filter and leave
your pond alone until the onset of
spring (as soon as the water
temperature reaches 50°F).
Never feed your fish during the
winter as their metabolism directly
relates to the water temperature,
and when it drops below 10°C
(50°F), the fish will not eat. In the
spring, reinstall your filter and
begin feeding your fish. A pond
thermometer will provide you with
the proper guidance in feeding your
fish according to temperature.
Creativity in the kitchen needn't
be limited to food preparation. You
can become your own decorator by
designing an imaginative front
panel for that kitchen mainstay -
the dishwasher.
The front panel can become a
rotating gallery, showcasing
children's art, enlarged photo
graphs, posters, theatre playbills, or
other decorative items you fancy.
Hobbies or special interests can
be reflected by displaying sheet
music, book jackets, collections of
matchbooks, coins or autographs,
postcards or greeting cards, travel
souvenirs, etc. Your dishwasher
front can even change designs with
the seasons, or be decorated for
holidays and special family
celebrations.
Other suggestions include using a
piece of decorative wallpaper or a
piece of patchwork quilting, a hand
embroidered sampler, gingham
fabric or folk art to complement an
Early American or country kitchen
decor. For an Oriental accent,
select a tatami mat, silk painting, an
Oriental kite, or a paper
reproduction of a kimono design.
It's easy to transform any
dishwasher from ordinary into a
work of art. For extra protection
and washability, just mount the
selection on 1/8-inch thick
tempered hardboard to fit the space
indicated by the manufacturer.
Cover with a sheet of clear acrylic
plastic the same thickness of the
hardboard. Delicate fabrics can be
placed on a lightweight poster
board cut to the exact size of the
panel. Smaller items selected for a
collage can be mounted on
cardboard backing. Artwork, such
as a photo, can be enlarged to the
desired size.
When mounting fabric, a photo
or poster, cut it to the proper size,
then lay it on the hardboard so that
the design is straight and placed as
you want it. Carefully pick up one
quarter of the material to be
mounted. Apply a spray adhesive
product on both the hardboard and
the underside of the material you're
mounting. Lower this portion and
apply gentle pressure to make sure
it's secure. Continue this procedure
on the remaining three quarters.
When the entire area is glued,
check to make sure there are no
wrinkles or bubbles, always
smoothing your work from the
center outward toward the edges.
Voila! Your kitchen workhorse,
the dishwasher, has been
transformed into a designer
showcase!
