One of only eight in the province, the new Brussels lodge has a membership of over 50. Grand Encampment inducts lodge By Bonnie Gropp An historical moment occurred in Brussels this past Saturday when the Grand Encampment, a division of the Independent Order of Odd­ fellows, instituted a new lodge, the Mapleton Ladies Encampment Auxiliary (LEA). At the ceremony, which was held Brussels PS news at Brussels Public School, the Elgin LEA conferred the matriarchal degree on 40 members, who will join the 13 already conferred to form the new Mapleton LEA. The lodge, which consists of Rebekahs and Oddfellows, is only the eighth LEA in Ontario. Its first charter was presented by the Grand Grade 8s hear guest speaker By Michael McDonald and Heather Douma On May 4 the Grade 8s had a guest speaker to discuss wood carving. Fred Negrijn has been carving for four years, and has taken classes in painting and wood carving at Fanshawe College in London. He has entered a number of competitions and is currently competing at an intermediate level. He sent a life-sized loon to a competition in the U.S. and got an honourable mention. Mr. Negrijn also teaches wood carving at his Exeter home. Congratulations to Mike Cooper, Jennifer Acton, and Ashley Gropp be Brussels People Roy and Reta Cousins of Newmarket visited their families on the weekend, and attended the United Church on Sunday for the christening of their great- granddaughter Rachel Lauren, daughter of Ken and Sheila. for their artwork which will displayed at the Children's Aid Society art exhibit. A Spring Carnival will be held at? BPS on Thursday, June 2 from 7 to 9 p.m. It is organized by the Parents Association to raise funds for the school. There will be lots to do, with free popcorn, face painting, mini golf, a silent auction and a special performance by the school band. Brussels School is getting a new team name. We have narrowed it down to the Brussels Blazers or the Brussels Flames. An artist is designing new team shirts and we hope to have them by the end of the month. The Brussels Spring concert was held May 5. Kindergarten to Grade 4 took part. The play was called Old Macdonald’s Farm and included singing, tap dancing and line dancing. The play is about two children and their mother who go to visit Uncle Mac on his farm. They help him to pick fruit and gather eggs. Thanks to all the teachers who helped set up and organize the concert. On May 5 the Grade 6s went to Wingham for a Drug Awareness presentation. The program was held at Wingham Public School. They had two guest speakers, one was a hard drug addict and the other was an alcoholic. Encampment Officers of Ontario under the leadership of Grand Patriarch John Strachan of Orillia. District Deputy Mel McCut­ cheon, who instigated the forming of an LEA for Brussels so men and women would have a lodge they could attend together, and his team installed the women into their respective offices. One of the most significant moments was the instal­ lation of Mr. McCutcheon's wife, Lois, as the first Chief Matriarch of the Mapleton LEA. "I am really proud that this has been accomplished during my time as District Deputy and especially pleased to have installed my wife to this position," he said. Following a gift presentation, 140 visitors and officers went to the Brussels Legion for a roast beef dinner. Guests attended from Sar- nia, Windsor, Toronto, Cambridge, Belleville, North Bay, Huntsville, Orillia, Sudbury, London and Aylmer. Tigers open season The Brussels Tigers open their fourth season of Huron County Men's Fastball League action Wednesday night when they travel to Blyth to meet the Soundproof. Last season the Tigers finished in fourth place with a 14-5-1 won-loss record and reached the league semi-finals before being eliminated by the eventual champion Seaforth Bears. The Tigers will compete in the North Division along with the Brussels Bulldogs, Blyth Sound­ proof, Blyth Decor, Clinton Selects, Walton Brewers and a new entry from Belgrave. The south division is comprised of teams from Bayfield, Zurich, Francis- town, Lieury and three Seaforth clubs, the Bears, the Tigers and Coop's Sports. The Tigers first home game is Sunday at 7:30 p.m. against Zurich.
