Grand Encampment inducts lodge
By Bonnie Gropp
An historical moment occurred in
Brussels this past Saturday when
the Grand Encampment, a division
of the Independent Order of Odd
fellows, instituted a new lodge, the
Mapleton Ladies Encampment
Auxiliary (LEA).
At the ceremony, which was held
Brussels PS news
at Brussels Public School, the Elgin
LEA conferred the matriarchal
degree on 40 members, who will
join the 13 already conferred to
form the new Mapleton LEA. The
lodge, which consists of Rebekahs
and Oddfellows, is only the eighth
LEA in Ontario. Its first charter
was presented by the Grand

On May 4 the Grade 8s had a
guest speaker to discuss wood
carving. Fred Negrijn has been
carving for four years, and has
taken classes in painting and wood
carving at Fanshawe College in
London. He has entered a number
of competitions and is currently
competing at an intermediate level.
He sent a life-sized loon to a
competition in the U.S. and got an
honourable mention. Mr. Negrijn
also teaches wood carving at his
Exeter home.

A Spring Carnival will be held at?

9 p.m. It is organized by the
Parents Association to raise funds
for the school. There will be lots to
do, with free popcorn, face
painting, mini golf, a silent auction
and a special performance by the
school band.
Brussels School is getting a new
team name. We have narrowed it
down to the Brussels Blazers or the
Brussels Flames. An artist is
designing new team shirts and we
hope to have them by the end of the
month.
The Brussels Spring concert was
held May 5. Kindergarten to Grade
4 took part. The play was called
Old Macdonald’s Farm and
included singing, tap dancing and
line dancing. The play is about two
children and their mother who go to
visit Uncle Mac on his farm. They
help him to pick fruit and gather
eggs. Thanks to all the teachers
who helped set up and organize the
concert.
On May 5 the Grade 6s went to
Wingham for a Drug Awareness
presentation. The program was held
at Wingham Public School. They
had two guest speakers, one was a
hard drug addict and the other was
an alcoholic.

District Deputy Mel McCut

significant moments was the instal
lation of Mr. McCutcheon's wife,
Lois, as the first Chief Matriarch of
the Mapleton LEA.
"I am really proud that this has
been accomplished during my time
as District Deputy and especially
pleased to have installed my wife to
this position," he said.
Following a gift presentation,
140 visitors and officers went to the
Brussels Legion for a roast beef
