Katherine plans to showcase all Canadian talent, including some locals, in the art of pottery stoneware, jewellery, weaving and knitting. Blyth Spirit opens By Janice Becker Katherine Safr is well acquainted with the struggle of artists in the area, so she and her husband Paul decided to do something about it. The couple, originally from Lon don, bought the small store previ ously known as The Pottery on Queen Street in Blyth. They recent ly opened a pottery and gift shop under the name Blyth Spirit. Katherine says she hopes to cre ate a venue for other Canadian artists as well as a market for her own work. "I am self-taught as a painter, potter and jewellery maker," she says. "Most of my pottery work will be stoneware." Katherine will display the work of other artists such as Brian Barry of Dutton who works in porcelain; Sam Cutell and Craig Marcucci in pottery; Lillemor Frantz, a Raku specialist; Janet Bailey, a weaver and Cherie Bowering, knitting and felt making along with others. "My work has a very rustic and traditional look to it," says Kather ine, "and much of the pottery and jewellery will reflect Celtic imagery." "All the pieces in the shop will be one of a kind except for the func tional dinnerware," she says. Katherine Safr will be holding an open house on May 21 at Blyth Spirit. At present, business hours are Thursday through Sunday from 12 noon until 5 p.m. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, MAY 4,1994. PAGE 3. A lively sing-song followed led by Harv McDowell and Vera Badley. Two April birthdays were recorded and Happy Birthday was sung to Nora Kelly and Feme McDowell. There were no April Anniversaries. There is sugar cane grown along the river but much of the rest of the land is desert. She viewed the pyramids and the Aswan Dam which irrigates all of Egypt.
