A work of art
Paul and Katherine Safr have recently opened Blyth Spirit,
a pottery and gift shop, in the building previously
occuppied by The Pottery, on Queen Street in Blyth.
Katherine plans to showcase all Canadian talent, including
some locals, in the art of pottery stoneware, jewellery,
weaving and knitting.
Blyth Spirit opens
By Janice Becker
Katherine Safr is well acquainted
with the struggle of artists in the
area, so she and her husband Paul
decided to do something about it.
The couple, originally from Lon
don, bought the small store previ
ously known as The Pottery on
Queen Street in Blyth. They recent
ly opened a pottery and gift shop
under the name Blyth Spirit.
Katherine says she hopes to cre
ate a venue for other Canadian
artists as well as a market for her
own work.
"I am self-taught as a painter,
potter and jewellery maker," she
says. "Most of my pottery work
will be stoneware."
Katherine will display the work
of other artists such as Brian Barry
of Dutton who works in porcelain;
Sam Cutell and Craig Marcucci in
pottery; Lillemor Frantz, a Raku
specialist; Janet Bailey, a weaver
and Cherie Bowering, knitting and
felt making along with others.
"My work has a very rustic and
traditional look to it," says Kather
ine, "and much of the pottery and
jewellery will reflect Celtic
imagery."
"All the pieces in the shop will be
one of a kind except for the func
tional dinnerware," she says.
Katherine Safr will be holding an
open house on May 21 at Blyth
Spirit.
At present, business hours are
Thursday through Sunday from 12
noon until 5 p.m.

Seniors club hosts
The Blyth Swinging Seniors met
in Memorial Hall at 12 noon on
April 27 for a potluck dinner with
the Brussels Seniors as their guests.
After the dinner President John
Hesselwood called the meeting to
order and opened with the singing
of O Canada with Graeme
McDowell at the piano. A lively
sing-song followed led by Harv
McDowell and Vera Badley.
Two April birthdays were
recorded and Happy Birthday was
sung to Nora Kelly and Feme
McDowell. There were no April
Anniversaries.
John conducted the business
meeting. Anyone interested in
competing in the Senior Games, to
. be held in Strathroy on June 20 &
21, should let Isabelle Craig know.
Entries are to be in by the middle of
May.
After the usual reports Jean
Nethery introduced the guest
speaker, Ethel Ball from Auburn.
She showed pictures of her trip to
Egypt last October. She landed in
Cairo where there are 16 million
people, 90 per cent are Muslims,
one per cent Jews and the rest are
Christians. They had a six-day
cruise on the Nile. There is sugar
cane grown along the river but
much of the rest of the land is
desert.
She viewed the pyramids and the
Aswan Dam which irrigates all of
Egypt. She also saw the King Tut
treasures and many other
interesting sights. Jean then
thanked Ethel for a very interesting
and informative presentation.
