Singers plan Cabaret Theatre Orangeville plans YC An evening of dancing, singing, good fun and great food awaits everyone who attends the Blyth Festival Singers' first annual Cabaret on May 14 in Blyth Memorial Community Hall. The choir will start off the evening's entertainment with a medley of well-known Broadway hits and film tunes, with an occasional bar song from mediaeval and renaissance times. Punctuating the choir's presenta tions will be solo performances by choir members Vicki Girth, John DeJaeger, Paul Zurbrigg and Christa Cameron. It is rumoured that pianists Carol Carter and Bob Stoner have a 90-year-old piece of rag time included in their repertoire. Blyth raconteur Duncan McGregor, MC for the evening, will let everyone know when the dancing begins in the Bainton Gallery. The music of Mixed Company of Goderich will have everyone on their feet and heading for the Gallery. More singing will follow before a scrumptious late evening supper is served. McKinlay. This gothic comedy opens Friday, May 6 at 8 p.m. and continues until May 28 at the McManus Theatre, (downstairs at the Grand). It stars Phi Bulani as Walt and Tony Martin as Roy. This production is directed by the author, Michael McKinlay, with set design by John Thompson, lights and sound design by Todd Charlton and costumes by Paddy Richardson. On a stormy night in 1936, the eve before the Disneys are about to obtain funding to complete the epic Snow White, a slightly mad Walt reaches out for the understanding, Carlton Showband at Blyth support and love of a brother he barely knows. Walt & Roy is a poignant and hilarious examination of doubt, trust, love and genius. Walt & Roy was the recipient of the Albert Culture Playwrighting Award in 1984, the Writer’s Guild Award in 1986 and was nominated for a Governor General's Award for English Drama in 1987. It was published in 1986 by Playwrights' Canada and has been used as curriculum at various Universities. It has received acclaimed productions in Edmonton, (Theatre Theatre Orangeville announces the establishment of its 1994 Summer Season Young Company. The Theatre Orangeville Young Company will be managed and directed by dancer, director, teacher and choreographer Bonnie Monaghan. Auditions and interviews for the Young Company will be held on Saturday, May 14. All young people from ages 13-21 are invited to apply. Scholarships will be offered based not only on performing talent, but on general interest in the theatre and an enthusiasm for the overall goals for the project. This is an opportunity for five - 15 local young people to be "in residence" for 10 weeks during Theatre Orangeville inaugural professional summer season. These young people will play an active part in all aspects of the 1994 summer season. They will have an opportunity both to train and to put that training into practice. They will work with the professional summer company in workshop and apprentice situations; and observe the professionals in rehearsals, technical set-ups and production meetings. In certain situations, they will work alongside the professionals as peers. The philosophical goal is to instill in these young people an understanding of the needs and demands of the professional theatre, and to encourage these young people to discover and develop their skills and interest in the theatre. The practical goal is to prepare the Young Company participants for real employment opportunities in community and professional theatre. In particular, it is to prepare them to be able to assume the paid box office, front of house, stage management, lighting, sound and technical responsibilities involved in operating the Orangeville Town Hall Opera House for community events and performances throughout the year. For more information, call the Theatre Orangeville office at (519) 942-3423. ■COUNTRY IxETTLE 1 For both the young and the young at heart, the upcoming per formance by The Carlton Show band has something to offer everyone.
