HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 1994-04-27, Page 7Auburn Compiled by Mildred Lawlor Phone 526-7589 The news from Duo entertains UCW Knox United Church held its UCW Thankoffering meeting at the church on Monday evening, April 18 with guests from Blyth, Nile, Goderich and Westfield in attendance. Darlene Empey welcomed all and offered prayer. Mark Hussey and Chris McIntosh of the Belgrave area sang a number of songs accompanying themselves on guitar. The theme was, humour of a sermon, and different skits were presented, while Darlene read Bible scriptures between scenes. Marilyn Verbeek held up signs announcing the topic of the skits, the first being, "The Road to Heaven, One Way Street" acted out by Elva Armstrong and Kathy Dunbar. The next was "Building a Tower to Heaven". "Be Thou Vision", a lesson in public speaking was acted out by Joyce Bean. The next, "Look Out Pastor speaks of shepherd Rev. Paul Ross conducted the service at Knox United Church and Nancy Park was organist. The Invitation to Worship was read alternately, followed by prayers. Hymn Tell Me The Stories of Jesus was sung. The King of Love was sung, followed by the scriptures. Saviour Like a Shepherd Lead Us was sung followed by Rev. Ross's sermon which was entitled, "The Shepherd WMS makes memorial donation The April meeting of the Aubum WMS was held at the home of Carol Daer. President Martha Daer welcomed all. The devotional was taken from the Glad Tidings, which each member participating. Frances Clark read two articles "He is Risen" and "A Visit to the Holy Land" taken from the Canadian Bible Society book. "A Whale of a Predicament" was performed by Anne Vincent. The final skit was "Just Like a Tree". The offering was received by Karen McClinchey and Mary Arthur. Marilyn Verbeek offered prayer. Everyone went down in the basement viewed the excellent display of quilts, knitting, crocheting books, knitted animals and baby sets. This was for the layette/community care project. Ruth Armstrong spoke on the display and also the Teddy Bear Auction. A lady from the bureau spoke on the children's bureau, which looks after 445 families in Huron County. Rev. Paul Ross offered prayer and everyone enjoyed the lunch and social time. Psalm". Rev. Ross gave the prayers and The Lord's Prayer was repeated in unison. The offering was received by Bob Worsell and Greg Park and dedicated in song. His Name Is Wonderful was sung. Rev. Ross pronounced the Benediction and the singing of Amens concluded the service. The collection was taken and dedicated. A donation was made to the Missionary Society, in memory of Lillian Letherland, who passed away recently. The minutes were read by Marion Haggitt. The May meeting will be held at the home of Martha Daer. The meeting closed with prayer and a lovely lunch was served by the hostess. WI installs new executive The Auburn Women’ Institute banquet was held on Thursday, April 21 at noon at the Kountry Kettle Restaurant, Blyth with 16 present. Grace was sung and everyone enjoyed a soup and salad bar meal. Members then went to the home of the president Jean Plaetzer. The Ode and Mary Stewart Collect was repeated and O Canada was sung with Marjorie McDougall as pianist. Evelyn Flett read readings entitled "Spring", "Decorations" and "What Kind of a Member are You". The minutes were read by Marion Haggitt. The 1993 yearly treasurer's report was given by Tena Empey. Discussions were held on the Lions Club spring sale to be held Saturday, May 7 from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m., towels for the kitchen, and a wall hanging, which is to be made for the Milton Museum. A committee was chosen to see about that. Mildred Lawlor gave the card report. Erma Cartwright read the slate of officers for 1994-95 and Betty Archambault installed them. The contract was awarded to Harry Donegan at a cost of $65,952.50. Road Superintendent George Humphrey was instructed by coun­ cil to invite tenders for calcium. All quotes must be received by May 3. Lavis Construction will be con­ tacted to roll the diamond at Lon- desboro, Aubum and hall grounds. Lavis has also been retained to sweep the streets of Londcsboro and Aubum for $60 per hour. Dave Plant will be asked to roll the grounds at the proper cemeter­ ies. Rhonda Bruxer. Jean then served delicious desserts and beverage. The meeting closed with the singing of the Queen. People Mr. William Anderson of Newmarket visited recently with his mother Bemice Anderson. Mr. and Mrs. Al Weber of RR 5, Stratford, visited Wednesday evening with Mr. and Mrs. Tom Lawlor. Council approved the extension of the permit for Lol 40, Cone. 14 until April 30, 1995, to allow the use of the property as a temporary trailer location. A tile drainage loan application was approved for Lot 8, Cone. 2, in the amount of $13,100, pending the availability of funds and township bylaws. Council granted permission to Clerk-Treasurer Bev. Shaddick, to attend a clerk-treasurer's conven­ tion from June 20-22, and a plan­ ning course from Aug. 21-24 at a cost of $481.50. The road and general accounts were approved for payment in the amount of $19,357.52 and $27, 300.30 respectively.
