HAPPY 30TH BIRTHDAY Uncle Wayne From - Meagan & Melissa feed poor nations The Blyth community "Canada Food Grains" Bank project for 1993 included 11 acres of com and three acres of barley. Several local churches, businesses, and individuals were very involved to get the project off the ground. Because of their effort, 1,000 bushels of corn was shipped to different countries to help those in need. The barley was sold to help fund the 1994 crop. All crops, and finances that are donated are matched by the Canadian International Development Agency at a ratio of four to one. Therefore the 1993 project equalled 5,000 bushels. This amount would feed 5,000 people for two months. The grains shipped abroad are not only given directly to feed the hungry, but are also used as payment for work projects. For every day a person works they receive 6.5 lbs. of com. With 5,000 bushels donated at 6.5 lbs. per day per person, this amount would pay for 43,076 days of work. The different jobs include reforestation, terracing, roads, building of water reservoirs, watering systems, etc. All work is done by hand and it not only feeds these people but is also teaching method. This plan of action helps them become self sufficient and makes it possible to grow their own crops. One man and his family of 10 can survive on five acres of land. Working this way with these people gives them self esteem, pride, self worth, and eventually self sufficiency. For the 1994 project, the churches involved are Blyth United, Londesboro United, Blyth Anglican, Blyth Church of God, Blyth St. Michael's, and Blyth Christian Reformed. The project includes 49 acres'of land, 35 at the Londesboro com dryers and 14 at Cropco north of Blyth. There has been a lot of interest shown so far and plans have been set for this year, said local project co-ordinator Herb Van Amers foort. The crop will be soybeans which includes 14 acres of test plots. Land has been donated once more and there is lots of volunteer help. Some reasons why the Canadian Food Grains Bank is growing is because of its "hands on" experience, Mr. VanAmersfoort says. "You can visualize what you are doing for those less fortunate in other countries. The administrative cost is less than three percent of the total budget. The project gives the BLUEWATER I KENNEL CLUB Experienced Instructors Serving Huron County for over 18 years presents its ANNUAL/ DOG OBEDIENCE COURSE For dogs over 5 months 10 week course...only to be held at $60 BLYTH COMMUNITY CENTRE Starting: Tuesday, April 26, 1994 7:00 p.m. NO DOGS FIRST NIGHT HEALTH & RABIES CERTIFICATE REQUIRED Pre-Register by calling: JANET LOBB —233-3372 (after 5 p.m.) LYNN NISBETT 524-4963 DEBBIE STEPHEN 527-2430 community a chance to grow and work together for a good cause."
