All cattle classes sell on strong, active trade Sales at Brussels Livestock for the week ending April 15 were: fed cattle, 958; cows, 235; veal calves, 182; sheep and goats, 153; stockers, 1,709; and pigs, light run. All classes of cattle at Brussels Bruce Schmidt of Walton can claim two top Canadian dairy producers. His Jersey cow Jamie was recently certified top Canadian in the Junior 3 for Milk class and Muffy, pictured here, earned tops in butterfat production earlier in the year. Schmidt cows tops By Janice Becker For Bruce and Grace Schmidt of RR3 Walton, their 13 1/2 years in dairy farming has paid off. Their Jersey cow Brace Volun teer Jamie has recently been certi fied the all-time class leader in the Junior 3 for Milk division. Her production statistics for 305 days are 9,537 kilograms of milk (for which the record was set), 469 kilograms of butterfat at 4.92 per cent, 318 kilograms of protein at 3.33 percent and BCAs (302-275- 265). Earlier this year, the Schmidts' three-year-old cow, Brace Gatsby Muffy earned a Canadian record for butterfat production in the year ling class. Muffy produced 6,683 kilograms of milk, 410 kilograms of butterfat at 6.13 percent and 215 kilograms of protein at 3.76 percent and BCAs (284-323-282). Muffy set the record in her first year of lactation in 1993 and is now entering her second. Mrs. Schmidt says Muffy is starting out slowly but, she did the same last year. "Her ability to break the record was probably due to her consistent level of production throughout lac tation," says Mr. Schmidt. She did not peak and then drop off. The All Time Canadian Produc tion Record was actually broken and filed in June of 1993 but, "it takes a long time to come through the system," he says. Livestock sold on a strong active trade. There were 654 steers on offer selling from $98 to $105 to the high of $122. Twenty-eight steers consigned by K & L Bray Farms, Do the Schmidts have a secret to their success? Mrs. Schmidt laughs and says a lot of luck is involved. Mr. Schmidt however, says there are certain qualities to look for when breeding the cows. He looks at the quality of the bulls available through the Canadi an-wide breeders' service. Information provided to the farmers gives details of three gen eration of the bull’s genetics. "It is important to find a bull which is 'stacked'." A "stacked" bull may show, in its genetic chart, a high production dam (mother) and granddam as well as bulls which have spawned high production cows. The more "stacking" of high pro duction animals, the better the chance of a high production cow, (hopefully), says Mr. Schmidt. "Preferably, you try to get a test bull which has two generations near the top of the industry." These are known as "juice" bulls. Even with all the knowledge and planning of genetics, Muffy came from an average grand dam and dam. The use of bulls with the most modern genetics has helped increase production, says Mr. Schmidt. "With the progressive breeding programs now being undertaken, the youngest cows are usually the best."
