Trustee for Morris and Turn berry Townships Doug Gamiss reported to the Huron County Board of Edu cation, at the April 4 meeting, that a joint calender had been estab lished between the HCBE, the Huron-Perth Roman Catholic Sepa rate School Board (HPRCSSB) and the Perth School Board (PB of Ed.) to provide coordination of services. Professional development (PD) days and examination schedules have been closely aligned, though the separate school board has more development days and the PB of Ed. has clumped PD days at the end of June to adjust the timing of examinations. The schedules have been co-ordi nated with HPRCSSB to allow bet ter co-ordination of busing as well. HPRCSSB will join HCBE in a two week March break but the Perth board will maintain the one week system. The board approved the schedule which sets out PD days on Dec. 2, Mar. 21-24, April 28 and June 28- 30 for the elementary schools. The secondary school system is the same except Dec. 2 is replaced by Jan. 30. For elementary schools under the HPRCSSB, PD days will be Aug. 30 to Sept. 2, Oct. 28, Dec. 2, April 28 and June 29-30. The secondary schools will not hold classes on Aug. 30 to Sept. 2, Jan. 30, April 28 and June 28-30. Examinations in both systems will be held from Jan. 20-27 and June 20-27. The separate school board accepted the proposed schedule, pending the decision by HCBE. ***** The board agreed to contact the Minister of Education and Training and the Minister of Finance to request immediate education finance reform. Six principles were outlined which stated: funding for education should be adequate, stable and pre dictable; access to education fund ing should be equal on a province wide basis; there should be an agreed upon package of services to be provided by or through the sys tem of education; students any where in Ontario should have access to equivalent services; the autonomy of school boards and parents must be respected and school boards and the Ministry of Education and Training must be accountable. ***** Trustees were informed, that with present budget concerns and the lack of information forthcoming from the province concerning grants and transfer payments, the board is unable to finalize plans for future capital expenditures where renovations are needed to accom modate Junior Kindergarten. The board decided to proceed cautiously with implementation. ***** Mr. Gamiss and Bea Dawson, trustee for Hay and Usbome Twps. and Zurich, were appointed as the representatives for the board on the antiracism and ethnocultural equity committee. ***** The greenhouse facilities at Cen tral Huron Secondary School and Goderich District Collegiate Insti tute will be looked at to determine more cost efficient ways of opera tion. Director of Education Paul Car roll says the greenhouses are obso lete and they should be demolished. "We can provide better, more up- to-date facilities," he said.
