Bible, book of second chance, pastor says
By James H. Carne, Pastor
The Missionary Church, Auburn
Who would have thought it! In
early March, during a Missions
Convention, a young lady announced
that she, along with hundreds of
others, was going to the former
Soviet Union, at the invitation of
the government, to instruct Russian
teachers as to how to teach the
Bible in their classrooms. Imagine!
The wonder is not only in the
unprecedented invitation by the
Russian government but also in the
fact that this is happening when, in
Canada, the Gideons are being no
longer allowed to distribute New
Testaments to students, teachers are
forbidden to tell Bible stories, and
prayer in the classroom is against
the law! Isn’t it awesome how 70
years of darkness helps one
appreciate the Light!
This past week I officiated at a
funeral. I began the service by
holding up the Bible and stating
that, on the dark and discouraging
subject of death, the Bible was the
textbook and had much to offer of
hope and comfort concerning those
who die in Christ. And this is the
book with which our enlightened
Canadian society
dispense!
The Bible is the
second chance. It
prodigal son, who squandered his
first opportunity and wasted his
life, being restored by a loving and
forgiving father. It is the only book
that gives any hope of starting over
when it states, "If anyone is in
Christ, he is a new creation; the old
wishes
book of
tells of
to
the
the
has gone, the new has come! All
this is from God, who reconciled us
to himself through Christ..."
(2Cor.5:17) It offers the insight
that, what one needs in order to
extricate himself from a hopeless
situation, is not a new opportunity
but to be a new person, and it
makes available that possibility.
Do the Creeds of Atheism and
Secular Humanism offer as much?
Will we replace the Bible with them?
Where else will one find a healer
in sickness, a comforter in sorrow
and "a very present help in time of
trouble?"
Isn't it interesting that not even
multiculturalism issues dissuaded
the Russian government from
giving the Bible a pre-eminent
place in its classrooms?

Pastor Came's message was "The

scripture from Acts 9: 1-19 Saul’s
conversation began with a crisis.
Conversion is a personal thing.
You cannot get to heaven just
because your parents love the Lord,
he said. Not many have a radical
experience like Saul, he said, but
