Bev Brown, the village representative on the Wingham and District Hospital Board met with councillors at their meeting Monday night to discuss options. Ms Brown said that she had discussed the situation with the hospital CEO Lloyd Koch, who said he would "be delighted" to help the village find another doctor, and added that the doctor would have privileges at the hospital. Ms Brown noted the difficulties in trying to entice doctors to rural areas as young doctors want to work in cities where they can "control the hours they work and have their patients at their doorstep," she said. She added as well, that the emergency rooms are going to be facing difficulties with an aging staff, as the doctors are exempt from on-call emergency room duties at the age of 55. The recent serious car accident Brussels Council briefs The board will submit a grant application, under the Federal Co operative Education Proposal for Special Needs Students. The SCOOP program will make co-operative education more accessible for senior students who have disabilities, are unable to pointed out the importance of emergency rooms, Ms Brown said and why they need to be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Ms Brown said, to encourage a doctor to establish a practice in Brussels, would mean offering him or her incentive. "You have to have a package to offer," she told councillors. Another suggestion she made was the idea of finding a nurse practitioner, who is qualified to deal with many emergency room treatments or advise the patient if they should see a doctor. "I think there are professionals, who want to raise a family in a place like Brussels. But you are going to have to roll out the red carpet. You're one community in many, you'll have to convince them why they should move here rather than another place." Councillor Bruce Hahn, who serves as the village's represen tative to the medical/dental board took Ms Brown's suggestions under advisement and said he will be discussing them with the board in the future. attain the entrance requirement (16 credits) for a co-op program, require additional academic assistance during placement orientation, would benefit from in- depth job and living skills training or who may need increased monitoring supervision. ***** A delegation from Hullett council made a presentation Jo the Management Committee, request ing discussions regarding the viability of opening a multi-use facility at Hullett Central Public School to accommodate a clerk's office, council chamber and joint usage community hall, auditorium and gymnasium. The elimination of grants to the Belgrave, Blyth and Brussels School Fair ($900) and to the Seaforth DHS band ($8,143) were also on the list. Doug Gamiss, trustee for Morris and Turnberry says he would support those cuts from the budget, even though he is a member of the school fair board. Mr. Carroll says the board will have a difficult task for 1994 but the budget talks will aim at the effects in 1995. Rec. budget gets OK % Brussels council approved the Rec board budget at the March 7 meeting. After a transfer of $10,000 from reserves to cover a shortfall of $9,993.24, due to the remaining balance for the dishwasher and ice resurfacing machine, and a transfer to the capital reserves of $7,650, a net decline of only $2,400 was left. Using the transfers, the levies requested from the municipalities is down by one per cent from last year. In the budget as well was a two per cent salary increase for arena manager Murray McArter. It was noted, however, that Morris Twp. council would not approve the budget if the increase remained. They suggested the money be used instead to pay the cost of levelling a piece of land adjacent to the arena. ***** A minor variance application for Juanita Smith was approved. ***** The quote of Meulensteen Tire in the amount of $375 for each tractor tire, which includes the cost of coming to the village to repair them was accepted by council. ***** Council was informed that The Ark had received a grant from the province.
