Blyth Novices take Wallace 6-0
The Blyth Novice team
successfully completed its quest for
victory, by defeating Wallace
Township in the Central Division
WOAA playoff series. It took six
games to determine the winner of
this three out of five series, due to
tied points.
In game four, on Tuesday, Feb.
22, in an extraordinary effort, Blyth
stormed the home team, 6-0, in
Kurtzville.
Shaun Henry, unassisted, opened
the scoring two minutes into the
game with a nice backhand into the
twines. Kirk Stewart netted goal
two after performing some nice
stick handling deep in Wallace's
zone. Stewart had received a
perfect pass from defenceman
Steven Van Amersfoort. Nicholas
Courtney initiated the next goal,
with a pass to Tyler Wilson who
zoomed a great shot past Wallace's
goalie.
The next two points belonged to
Michael Bean. The first goal was a
rising wrist shot from the blue line,
and number two came after Bean
turned on the jets to zoom in from
the neutral zone deep into
Wallace's territory, and lifted the
puck into the far comer of the net.
Goal six came from Jeff Carter,
who blasted an unbeatable slap shot
up around the goalie's ears. Robbie
Archambault, who had been
thwarted throughout the game on
his own break away rushes, was
awarded the assist.
Blyth's goalie, Eric Jarrett,
played a solid game and faced
frequent rushes and direct shots.
Jarrett deserved the shutout as he
met and conquered every challenge
presented to him.
Andrew Toll broke up many
passing plays and rushes in his own
zone.
Centre, Micah Loder got passes
off to his forwards from difficult
situations.
Forward's Justin Rinn, Neil
Salverda and Bradley Schmidt kept
close check on their oppositions'
positions in their own zone, and
presented offensive plays deep in
Wallace's end.
In game five, on Blyth's home ice
on Saturday, Feb. 25, Wallace had
a mission to regain esteem and
revenge tee previous loss. Wallace
played a strong defensive game
which frequently interfered with
Blyth's offensive attempts. Also,
Wallace kept driving at the net with
endless passing and rushing plays
which gave them a four goal lead
until the last 26 seconds of the
game when Jeff Carter fed Shaun
Henry who laced one in for Blyth.
This was an exciting game with
both teams playing hard, but
Wallace seemed to have the edge
and capitalized on all opportunities
to enjoy the win and tie up the
series, at five points each.
The saga finally ended on
Sunday, Feb. 27 at Kurtzville. As
the Canadian team skated off the
ice with an Olympic silver medal,
Blyth skated on to face their equal
opponents.
The first eight and a half minutes
of the game held an excellent
display of skating, passing and
shooting, as bodies and pucks
zoomed end to end in the fast-
paced action.
Players on both sides were giving
100 per cent of which was
acknowledged by fans and coaches.
The tension finally snapped as
Wallace's Justin Russell scored.
However, two minutes later, Bean
gave Blyth a reason to celebrate as
he shot one past goalie, Brady
Newbigging, to tie the game.
Stewart and Salverda initiated and
assisted in Bean's goal.
Blyth got the go-ahead goal after
Archambault performed a nice
wrap-around pass up to Carter who
lifted the puck over and past
players into Wallace's net.
Wallace immediately retaliated
and responded by scoring with one
minute left in period two.
In the third period, goalie Eric
Jarrett, faced every challenge
presented him with calm, cool
determination and skill. He allowed
no rebounds, his glove hand
swooped flying pucks out of mid
air and he stood up to face every
rush.
The final winning goal was a
nifty wrist shot by Cole Stewart,
who was cruising into a good
position 20 feet in front of
Wallace's net when he let the
unassisted, successful shot go.
Every player on the ice should be
recognized for their excellent
efforts as this evenly-matched
series drew to a close, with a 3-2
win for Blyth.
Blyth now faces Drayton with the
opening game on Tuesday, March 1
in Drayton at 7:30 p.m.
Crusaders tie series
Dean Wheeler's two third period
goals led the Brussels Crusaders to
a 5-4 win over the Durham
Thundercats Sunday afternoon in
Brussels.
The win ties their best of seven
semi-final series at one game
apiece with game three in Durham
Saturday at 8, and game four in
Brussels Sunday, also at 8.
Ron Strome, with two, and Mike
Bettles also scored for Brussels,
who trailed 3-2 early in the third
before rebounding with three in a
row.
Friday night in Durham, the
Thundercats scored five third
period goals enroute to a 9-3
opening game victory.
Brad Carter scored twice,
including once shorthanded, with
Dean Wheeler adding the single.
In other semi-final action the
Lakeshore Winterhawks lead the
Tavistock Royals two games to
none after 7-3 and 9-3 victories.
Take a swing
The Durham Thundercats came to Brussels on Feb. 27 to
confront the Crusaders for the second in a seven game
series. With a 5-4 win by the Crusaders, the series is tied
at one game apiece.
