Tavistock nips Midgets The Blyth Tykes gave a great effort against Stephen Township in Huron Park on Saturday, Feb. 26, yet suffered a 3-0 loss. Brett Bean played a good game in net for Blyth. He made some good saves and allowed few rebounds or opportunities for Stephen to capitalize Unfortunately, Bean couldn't stop K. Masse who obtained the hat- trick. Taylor Hesselwood and Sandy Hay made some key defensive plays as they cleared the zone, passing to forwards, Darcey Cook and Josh Albrechtas. These on. Christopher Bernard hustled hard throughout the game initiating some rushes by Blyth. Cody and Luke Anderson and Ryan McClinchey played aggressive double shifts in both the offensive and defensive zones. This team effort was complimented by Tammy Root, who stopped some rushes along the boards in the losing effort. All players should be recognized for their diligent play and hard work as they kept the game close and did not allow Stephen to dominate. NOM 1H0 519-523-4311 By Rusty Blades The Blyth Midgets were eliminated from their OMHA playoffs last weekend as they were shaded 3-2 by Tavistock at home on Feb. 25. They put in a gritty performance but, in the end, they came up just a little short. Tavistock opened the scoring with the only first period score four and a half minutes into the match. Blyth tied the game with the only second period marker as they notched a power play goal four minutes into the period. Ryan Chamney carried the puck deep into the Tavistock zone and passed off to Jason Heipel who fired one at the goal. The puck was partially stopped and it lay on the goal line Christopher Howson's long reach pushed the disc across the line. The score remained deadlocked at 1-1 until Tavistock took the lead four minutes into period three. They upped the count to 3-1 with six and a half minutes left in the third while enjoying a man advantage. Their two goal lead was short lived as Blyth responded with a short handed goal 34 seconds later to creep back to within a goal. Heipel provided the thrills with a tremendous individual effort as he carried the puck past a couple of opposition defenders before deking the cage keeper and slipping the puck home. Blyth put up a fight until the end Admiral 71/2 oz. Campbell's 10oz. Tavistock hung on for a 3-2 win which gave them the series, seven points to one point, and advances them further into OMHA playdowns. Blyth can also be proud of their accomplishments this season as well. With the addition of three players from Clinton the OMHA bumped the Midgets up to the 'C' Division from their usual 'E' Division for the playoffs. They played their best hockey of the season in sweeping both Milverton and Wiarton on their way to the WOAA Midget 'C' Championship. Their determined efforts continued against Tavistock even though they only gained a tie out of the four game series. Hopefully a couple of other Blyth minor hockey teams can join the Midgets this season by winning a WOAA Championship and advancing into OMHA competition.
