In their playoff series against
Wallace Township the Blyth
Novice team have split their home
games with a win on Thursday,
Feb. 17 and a loss on Saturday,
Feb. 19. These teams had
previously tied their first game in
Kurtzville.
In game two, Wallace initialed
the scoring with a goal in the first
four minutes of the game. The
score remained unchanged until
Justin Rinn's successful wrist shot
put Blyth on the game sheet, with
only 23 seconds left in that period.
Again, Wallace took the lead in
the second period, but Jeff Carter
responded for Blyth off a nice pass
from Steven Van Amersfoort.
In the third, Wallace came on
with a vengeance and scored one
minute into the period. As the
routine seemed to go, Blyth tied it.
Jeff Carter took a wicked shot that
bounced off Neil Salverda and
redirected to Robbie Archambault,
who poked it into the net.
The Blyth team finally managed
to obtain the go-ahead goal when
Shaun Henry passed to Kirk
Stewart, who found teammate
Tyler Wilson open. Wilson sent a
great shot directly into Wallace's
net.
With 1:44 left to play, Michael
Bean added one more insurance
goal for Blyth, after taking the puck
end-to-end. This goal started a
scoring frenzy, when 30 seconds
later Wallace piked a rebound
under goalie Eric Jarrett. In an
attempt to add more offensive force
in their quest for the tying goal,
Wallace pulled their goalie, only to
have Carter shoot in the empty-
netter. This proved to be the game
winner, because with just 11
seconds left, Wallace came back
and scored.
This goal raised the fans' level of
excitement and noise by many
decibels, as the final laceoff
occurred deep in Blyth's zone and
possibly the tying goal was only
feet away. However, the home
team came through and was
rewarded with the hard-fought win.
In game three, the scoring pattern
changed. Cole Stewart put in an
unassisted goal, and for the first
time in this series Blyth opened the
scoring. This goal came three
minutes into the second period after.
a scoreless first interval.
Wallace silenced Blyth with two
goals late in the third period. The
game ended as a 2-1 win for the
visitors.
Spectators were treated to an
excellent, evenly-matched game,
which held both brilliant plays and
disappointments for each team.
Blyth travels to Kurtzville on
Tuesday, Feb. 22 for game four and
home again on Saturday, Feb. 26 at
2 p.m. for game five.
The Brussels Atoms houseleague
team finished the regular season
with a loss in Blyth Feb. 16.
Goalie Matthew Elliott had his
work cut out for him as the strong
offensive Blyth team snuck in1
seven goals, leaving Brussels
behind by four when all was done.
Brussels looked good early, scor
ing when Carla Hunt set up Matt
McCall for the first goal of the
game, but before the period ended
Blyth had made it 2-1.

more, then taking an even stronger
lead in the third with two more
early goals.
The Brussels offensive finally
started putting it together halfway
through the period when McCall
and Chris Blake combined for the
pass to Joshua Gropp who dropped
it in to narrow the lead. After one
more Blyth goal, the trio combined
again when Gropp and Blake set up
McCall who lit the light a second
time, but it was too little too late
for the visitors.
Playoffs began Tuesday in Huron
Park.
Heipel sent a crisp pass out in front
that was one-timed by Brian
McNichol past a slow-to-react
goal lender.
Blyth quickly lost whatever
momentum they had just gained as
Tavistock restored their three goal
lead before the period expired.
Blyth opened up their game in the
third in a desperate attempt to close
the 4-1 Tavistock lead but they
couldn’t penetrate the rugged
opposition defence.
In their effort to recharge their
offence, the Midgets let their
defensive game slip and Tavistock
put the game away with two late
