The two faced-off in Blyth on Feb. 16 for this last game of regular play. Blyth was victorious. After a tie to open the round in Wallace, Blyth came back to win in this second game, then lost the third for a series split. Last minute goal aids Novices /^Schneider's 450 g 'X Schneider's 175 g 'X RED HAM HOTS STEAKS 1.99 L 1.79J In their playoff series against Wallace Township the Blyth Novice team have split their home games with a win on Thursday, Feb. 17 and a loss on Saturday, Feb. 19. These teams had previously tied their first game in Kurtzville. In game two, Wallace initialed the scoring with a goal in the first four minutes of the game. The score remained unchanged until Justin Rinn's successful wrist shot put Blyth on the game sheet, with only 23 seconds left in that period. Again, Wallace took the lead in the second period, but Jeff Carter responded for Blyth off a nice pass from Steven Van Amersfoort. In the third, Wallace came on with a vengeance and scored one minute into the period. As the routine seemed to go, Blyth tied it. Jeff Carter took a wicked shot that bounced off Neil Salverda and redirected to Robbie Archambault, who poked it into the net. The Blyth team finally managed to obtain the go-ahead goal when Shaun Henry passed to Kirk Stewart, who found teammate Tyler Wilson open. Wilson sent a great shot directly into Wallace's net. With 1:44 left to play, Michael Bean added one more insurance goal for Blyth, after taking the puck end-to-end. This goal started a scoring frenzy, when 30 seconds later Wallace piked a rebound under goalie Eric Jarrett. In an attempt to add more offensive force in their quest for the tying goal, Wallace pulled their goalie, only to have Carter shoot in the empty- netter. This proved to be the game winner, because with just 11 seconds left, Wallace came back and scored. This goal raised the fans' level of excitement and noise by many decibels, as the final laceoff occurred deep in Blyth's zone and possibly the tying goal was only feet away. However, the home team came through and was rewarded with the hard-fought win. In game three, the scoring pattern changed. Cole Stewart put in an unassisted goal, and for the first time in this series Blyth opened the scoring. This goal came three minutes into the second period after. a scoreless first interval. Wallace silenced Blyth with two goals late in the third period. The game ended as a 2-1 win for the visitors. Spectators were treated to an excellent, evenly-matched game, which held both brilliant plays and disappointments for each team. Blyth travels to Kurtzville on Tuesday, Feb. 22 for game four and home again on Saturday, Feb. 26 at 2 p.m. for game five. The Brussels Atoms houseleague team finished the regular season with a loss in Blyth Feb. 16. Goalie Matthew Elliott had his work cut out for him as the strong offensive Blyth team snuck in1 seven goals, leaving Brussels behind by four when all was done. Brussels looked good early, scor­ ing when Carla Hunt set up Matt McCall for the first goal of the game, but before the period ended Blyth had made it 2-1. The second period was all Blyth with the home team lagging on two Tavistock takes Blyth By Rusty Blades The Blyth Midgets dug themselves a deep hole in their playoff series against Tavistock last week as they lost two road games to fall behind five points to one point in their six point series. In Tavistock on Feb. 15 Blyth fell behind early and watched their offence struggle as they lost 6-1. Tavistock took a 2-0 lead four minutes into the game and increased it to 3-0 midway through period two. Blyth finally got on the board with 58 seconds remaining in the second while enjoying a power play. The Brussels offensive finally started putting it together halfway through the period when McCall and Chris Blake combined for the pass to Joshua Gropp who dropped it in to narrow the lead. After one more Blyth goal, the trio combined again when Gropp and Blake set up McCall who lit the light a second time, but it was too little too late for the visitors. Playoffs began Tuesday in Huron Park. Heipel sent a crisp pass out in front that was one-timed by Brian McNichol past a slow-to-react goal lender. Blyth quickly lost whatever momentum they had just gained as Tavistock restored their three goal lead before the period expired. Blyth opened up their game in the third in a desperate attempt to close the 4-1 Tavistock lead but they couldn’t penetrate the rugged opposition defence.
