The Brussels Bulls have been
eliminated from the Western Junior
'C' semifinals by the Mt. Forest
Patriots. The Patriots won the series
in five games with a 5-3 victory
Sunday, but the Bulls went down
battling until the final 10 seconds.
Mt. Forest jumped out to a 3-1
lead after 40 minutes but Brussels
made it interesting when Jason
Baier scored on a nice pass from
Bill Henry with under nine minutes
to play. With the Bulls pressing for
the equalizer, Mt. Forest notched
its fourth goal of the game on a two
on one. Bulls Coach Scott
Pettigrew pulled out all the stops in
the dying minutes. With one Mt.
Forest player already in the penalty
box, the Patriots Mike Bowden was
caught with an illegal stick Jeremy
Beimes scored with the two man
advantage to pull within one again,
but even with netminder Scott
Walls on the bench the Bulls could
not even it up. An empty net goal
with 10 seconds left sealed the
victory for the Patriots.
Saturday afternoon in Brussels,
with the Bulls facing elimination,
the club came up with one of its
best offensive displays of the
season to live to see another day.
.The Bulls started slowly falling
behind 3-0 but after a time out,
rallied back to take a 7-5 lead after
40 minutes. The two teams traded
goals in the third and the Bulls won
it 8-6. Zack Smith paced the attack
with a goal and three assists. Nate
Bender, Beirnes and Jason
McNichol each had a pair while
Darin Alviano pitched in with a
short handed breakaway effort.
The Bulls Friday night dropped a
5-4 decision in Mt. Forest. The
Bulls jumped out to a 2-0 lead on
goals by Beirnes, but could not
hang on. Greg McNevan also
scored a pair.
Coach Scott Pettigrew said, "I'm
really proud of the effort we
displayed in this series. We had
some key injuries but we battled
right to the final buzzer and there is
no shame in that.
Bulls President Joe Kerr says a
public meeting will be held March
7 at 7:30 at the Brussels, Morris
and Grey Community Centre to
discuss the future of Junior hockey
in Brussels. Mr. Kerr says everyone
is welcome to attend.
