playoffs against Wallace
On Saturday, Feb. 12 the Blyth
Novice team travelled to Kurtzville
to challenge the Wallace Township
team for the start of a six-point
series.
Wallace came out strong and
tallied two unanswered goals in the
first period. Blyth finally woke up
and retaliated in the second period.
Jeff Carter took Cole Stewart's
pass, zooming the shot behind the
goalie.
Wallace regained the two goal
lead with a successful shot into the
twines late in the period.
Thirty-seven seconds into the
third Blyth scored on a power play,
with the combination of Cole
Stewart assisting Jeff Carter on
another booming shot blowing
away the opposition goalie. Two
minutes later, Kirk Stewart took
over and tied up the game with
some fine skating and stick
handling to reach the net and score.
With six minutes remaining,
Wallace came gunning back, and
got one past Blyth's solid net-
minder Eric Jarrett.
The game remained a nail biter,
which intensified as Cole Stewart
managed to net the tying goal with
only one and a half minutes left to
play. Robbie Archambault and Jeff
Carter were credited with the
assists.
Despite an exciting 10 minute
overtime period in which both
teams had opportunities to end the
game, neither were able to
capitalize on their chances, so the
tie remained. Each team picked up
one point.

Atom Reps sweep series
Brussels Assistant Captain Jason Baier works around three Mount Forest Patriots defending
their end during this first period play in Sunday's game in Brussels. The first place Patriots
took control of this semi-final game, scoring four, while shutting out the home team.
The Blyth Atom Rep hockey
team eliminated Wallace Township
Friday night with an 8-3 victory to
sweep the series three games to
none.
In game one, Blyth scored three
first period goals and coasted to an
easy 6-1 win. Jeremy Van
Amersfoort scored three times,
Matt Anderson twice and Dave
Ansley added a single for the
winners. Assists went to Matt
Anderson, Adam Anderson, Tyler
Stewart, Derek Cook, Drew Corneil
and Bryce Toll.
Blyth travelled to Kurtzville for
game two and had a tougher time.
Wallace scored first, however
Blyth led 4-3 at the end of the
second period. Blyth came out
strong in the third and scored three
unanswered goals to seal a 7-3
victory. Ansley and Matt Anderson
each scored twice with singles
going to Joel Arthur, Stewart and
Van Amersfoort.
Blyth lost the flip and again had
to travel to Kurtzville Friday night
for the third game.
Again Wallace put up a tough
fight on home ice. However, Blyth
led 5-3 at the end of the second
period, thanks to several huge saves
by Blyth puckstopper Dean Wilson.
As in game two, Blyth turned the
jets on and dinted the twine three
times in the third to win 8-3.
Van Amersfoort led the offensive
attack with four goals, Ansley
added two and Cook and Arthur
completed the goals. Assists went
to Stewart, 3; Matt Anderson, two,
Cook, two, Toll, Shaun Bromley,
Corneil and Nathan Shannon.
Blyth moves on to the next round
of playoffs and will meet an always
tough Huron Park squad. The first
game of the five series will start
Thursday night at 7 p.m. in Blyth.
Bulls eliminate Walkerton, 6-2
last
The Bulls eliminated the
Walkerton Blackhawks
Tuesday night with a convincing 6
- 2 win in the third and deciding
game of their quarterfinal. The
Bulls defensive corps provided
much of the offence. Blueliners
Chad Woods, Zack Smith, Tim
Beyer and Bill Henry fired singles.
Peter Mulder capped the Bulls'
scoring with the final two goals.
Mulder did not arrive until late in
the game because he was writing an
exam at university in London but
he made his presence felt.
The first place Mt. Forest Patriots
selected the fourth place Bulls as
their semi-final opponent and the
best of seven series opened Friday
night. Despite being huge
underdogs the Bulls almost stole
the opening game of the series.
Brussels opened the scoring in the
first minute of play when Greg
McNevan blasted a slapshot from
the left wing boards past a startled
Patriots netminder. The Bulls made
it 2-0 a few minutes later when
Jason Baier snuck in a powerplay
marker with a nifty wraparound.
Some tight checking kept Mt.
Forest off the scoreboard until the
third period. Mt. Forest tied the
game and it looked like the Bulls
were on the ropes, but with 41
seconds remaining Baier
intercepted a pass and snapped a
shot home to make it 3-2. The
Bulls could not kill the clock,
though and with six seconds
remaining Mt. Forest tied the game,
then won it 4-3 in overtime on a
Museum plans day camp
breakaway goal by Ken Iles.
Game two Sunday saw the
speedier Mt. Forest team dominate.
The Patriots frustrated the Bulls
with a 4-0 victory. League MVP
Brad Wikston got the shutout
stopping 34 shots.
The series continues Friday night
in Mt. Forest at 8:30. Game four
will be Saturday afternoon in
Brussels at 4 p.m. If a fifth game is
necessary it will be Sunday in Mt.
Forest at 1 p.m.
The other semi-final between
Wingham and Hanover is turning
into a rough and tumble high
scoring affair. Wingham won the
opener 10-8 while Hanover won
game two 9 - 8 in overtime.
