Winter in Walton
Sunny skies and perfect trails helped to make the Walton Sports Club's annual poker rally this
past Sunday a big success. Over 490 poker hands were sold to riders out to enjoy the day.
Dave Saldivar won the top poker hand, while the winner of the draw for a Puma Arctic Cat
was Alec Thompson of Atwood.
UCW’s country lunch a success
Not sure how many to expect or
even if the idea would go over the
UCW were all smiles and very
delighted at the turnout of their first
country luncheon and card day held
Feb. 1.
The Walton UCW began its
February meeting with a pot luck
lunch. Following the meal Gloria
Wilbee and Kathleen Williamson
led the worship part of the meeting.
Using 'Love' as their theme,
Kathleen Read I Corinthians 13 and
then did readings called "Previous
Moments", and "What if Parents
Never Met?"
Gloria chose to talk about St.
Valentines, who was a Christian
during 300 A.D. when it was quite
dangerous to be one. He was
sentenced to death for not
worshipping the emperor. The
jailer's daughter began visiting him
and it was just before his death that
he wrote her a note and signed it,
'Your Valentine'.
Phyllis Mitchell president,
welcomed former members Pat
Bennett of Brussels; Jean Bewley,
Brussels; Maxine Marks, Seaforth;
Pauline Bennett, Seaforth; Mary
McCall, Seaforth and Dorothy
McNichol, Seaforth.
Phyllis handed the meeting over
to Edith Wey who is in charge of
Archives and she went down
memory lane naming all of the past
presidents of the UCW from 1962
on. The very first president was
Annie Reid and Pauline Bennett

was the secretary with Leona
McDonald treasurer. Pauline
remembers the fun they had on
church picnics. That year the
women helped purchase the two
new furnaces.
Phyllis Mitchell was next in line
for the presidency and she recalls
the time Rev. Charles Higinbothom
got his gown caught in the furnace
fan. Then there was the time when
all the silverware fell making a
terrific noise and Mrs. Higin
bothom, Charles's mother, who was
sitting upstairs waiting for church
to start said in her Scottish voice,
"There goes Charley up the
chimney!
Florence McGavin was president
from 1966-67. She was reported to
be one who would help people keep
on track calming them when they
would blow their cool. Vera
McDonald took the job next,
followed by Grace Roe, then in
1972 Jean Bewley had the job for
two years. Marie McGavin took
over and recalls all the wonderful
help and advice she received from
some of the older members. Edith
Wey then had her turn and was
very involved in various positions
in the church. Marilyn McDonald
had her turn in 1979 and
remembers the music nights that
began that year.
In 1982 Viola Kirkby was elected
and after two years Helen Craig
took office and noted that that was
Sex Ed. week
February 14 - 20 is Sexual Week
in Huron County. The theme this
year is "Sexual Health Education
Begins at Home". Pamphlets,
bookmarks and posters will be
displayed at Huron County libraries
and Huron County Health Unit
branch offices.
Parents of children in daycare
centres and nursery schools will be
given newsletters and "Talk Sex"
pamphlets with tips on talking with
children about sex.
Public Health Nurses are also

to talk with children and teens
about sex. Books, pamphlets and
videos are available from the
Huron County Health Unit to help
parents talk with their children in a
comfortable manner.
Sexual Health Week '94 supports
the theme of International Year of
the Family and the positive role
that parents play in providing
sexual health information to their
children.
Discussion about sexuality in the
home provides an opportunity for
parents to share information, family

when the red carpet was placed
upstairs and she had written a poem
about the event and it was read at
the annual meeting. Marion Godkin
filled the position next and that was
the year that they held the quilt
show. The whole upstairs of the
church was lined with beautiful
quilts. The downstairs held
antiques. That year they also
bought new dishes.
Olene Dennis was the next
president from 1988-89. She recalls
the purchasing of the new fridge
and stoves. She also told of the
time she had asked a person to
come be Lheir guest speaker, then
later heard that he charged $200.
That caused her many a sleepless
night, but to her great relief she
later learned that he didn't charge
churches that much.
Dorothy Sholdice was leader for
1990-91, which was the year to
paint the inside of the church.
Marie McGavin did an excellent
job of leading the group in 1992,
which saw the manse being
prepared for the new minister and
his family. Finally 30 years later,
Phyllis Mitchell is back at the
helm.
The correspondent says she loved
hearing all of the history and the
funny stories the women had to tell
as they remembered back through
the years. They have worked so
hard and have been and still are
committed to their church and
community, says Patty.
