Winter in Walton Sunny skies and perfect trails helped to make the Walton Sports Club's annual poker rally this past Sunday a big success. Over 490 poker hands were sold to riders out to enjoy the day. Dave Saldivar won the top poker hand, while the winner of the draw for a Puma Arctic Cat was Alec Thompson of Atwood. UCW’s country lunch a success Not sure how many to expect or even if the idea would go over the UCW were all smiles and very delighted at the turnout of their first country luncheon and card day held Feb. 1. The Walton UCW began its February meeting with a pot luck lunch. Following the meal Gloria Wilbee and Kathleen Williamson led the worship part of the meeting. Using 'Love' as their theme, Kathleen Read I Corinthians 13 and then did readings called "Previous Moments", and "What if Parents Never Met?" Gloria chose to talk about St. Valentines, who was a Christian during 300 A.D. when it was quite dangerous to be one. He was sentenced to death for not worshipping the emperor. The jailer's daughter began visiting him and it was just before his death that he wrote her a note and signed it, 'Your Valentine'. Phyllis Mitchell president, welcomed former members Pat Bennett of Brussels; Jean Bewley, Brussels; Maxine Marks, Seaforth; Pauline Bennett, Seaforth; Mary McCall, Seaforth and Dorothy McNichol, Seaforth. Phyllis handed the meeting over to Edith Wey who is in charge of Archives and she went down memory lane naming all of the past presidents of the UCW from 1962 on. The very first president was Annie Reid and Pauline Bennett [Compjtedby Phone aa7-8290~] People There were 11 tables of euchre in play at the Ethel Hall Monday evening. The 50/50 draw winner was Shirley Verstoep, high lady, Eva Harrison; low lady, Gertie Lambkin; high man, Harold Met­ calfe; low man, George Pearson; most lone hands, Isabelle Bremner, Alan Martin and Charles Harrison; closest birthday, Bob Bateman, Bette Coulter and Adrian Verstoep. The next euchre is Feb. 14 at 8:30 p.m. Be sure to bring your sweetheart out for a night of euchre. Congratulations to Doug and Jean Evans on the arrival of a new granddaughter Abigail Grace, first child for Bonnie and Steve Conners of London. Congratulations as well to Clarence and Rosemarie Bishop who have a new grandson Maxwell George, first son for Darlene and George Harrietha. Sympathy is extended to Barb and Larry Ward on the recent pass­ ing of Barb's mother, Audrey Val- lance of Harriston. was the secretary with Leona McDonald treasurer. Pauline remembers the fun they had on church picnics. That year the women helped purchase the two new furnaces. Phyllis Mitchell was next in line for the presidency and she recalls the time Rev. Charles Higinbothom got his gown caught in the furnace fan. Then there was the time when all the silverware fell making a terrific noise and Mrs. Higin­ bothom, Charles's mother, who was sitting upstairs waiting for church to start said in her Scottish voice, "There goes Charley up the chimney! Florence McGavin was president from 1966-67. She was reported to be one who would help people keep on track calming them when they would blow their cool. Vera McDonald took the job next, followed by Grace Roe, then in 1972 Jean Bewley had the job for two years. Marie McGavin took over and recalls all the wonderful help and advice she received from some of the older members. Edith Wey then had her turn and was very involved in various positions in the church. Marilyn McDonald had her turn in 1979 and remembers the music nights that began that year. In 1982 Viola Kirkby was elected and after two years Helen Craig took office and noted that that was Sex Ed. week February 14 - 20 is Sexual Week in Huron County. The theme this year is "Sexual Health Education Begins at Home". Pamphlets, bookmarks and posters will be displayed at Huron County libraries and Huron County Health Unit branch offices. Parents of children in daycare centres and nursery schools will be given newsletters and "Talk Sex" pamphlets with tips on talking with children about sex. Public Health Nurses are also available to speak to groups on how to talk with children and teens about sex. Books, pamphlets and videos are available from the Huron County Health Unit to help parents talk with their children in a comfortable manner. Sexual Health Week '94 supports the theme of International Year of the Family and the positive role that parents play in providing sexual health information to their children. Discussion about sexuality in the home provides an opportunity for parents to share information, family values and beliefs. Being able to discuss sexuality in one's family 1 when the red carpet was placed upstairs and she had written a poem about the event and it was read at the annual meeting. Marion Godkin filled the position next and that was the year that they held the quilt show. The whole upstairs of the church was lined with beautiful quilts. The downstairs held antiques. That year they also bought new dishes. Olene Dennis was the next president from 1988-89. She recalls the purchasing of the new fridge and stoves. She also told of the time she had asked a person to come be Lheir guest speaker, then later heard that he charged $200. That caused her many a sleepless night, but to her great relief she later learned that he didn't charge churches that much. Dorothy Sholdice was leader for 1990-91, which was the year to paint the inside of the church. Marie McGavin did an excellent job of leading the group in 1992, which saw the manse being prepared for the new minister and his family. Finally 30 years later, Phyllis Mitchell is back at the helm. The correspondent says she loved hearing all of the history and the funny stories the women had to tell as they remembered back through the years. They have worked so hard and have been and still are committed to their church and community, says Patty. approaching can assist children to develop the skills necessary to build strong, healthy future relationships. They enjoyed a week in Margarita Islands. The weather was around 30 and a few of them learned the hard way that sunscreen does work. Anyone watching Street Legal on Friday would have seen Peter Sun. School breakfast set for Feb. 13 Donna McClure and daughter, Trisha were greeters at Duff's United Church on Feb. 6. Rev. Banks welcomed everyone and announced the Sunday School Breakfast next Sunday at 8:30. Donations will be taken at the door. The anthem was called "For those Tears I Died" featuring Don McDonald as the soloist and the rest of the choir harmonizing on the chorus. Rev. Banks's time with the children was spent talking about how Jesus healed a little girl. His sermon was called, 'Christ the Healer'. Sharon Godkin read scripture and Dorothy Sholdice read the 'Minute for Missions'. . Smith the past Blyth Festival Artistic Director, who also acted in a few plays. Many Hands being one of them. One hundred and fifty machines hit the trails for the Walton Poker Derby. There were 496 poker hands sold. Alec Thompson from Atwood won the Puma Arctic Cat and Dave Saldivar won the top poker hand. WI to meet The Walton WI will hold its monthly luncheon on Feb. 16. Later that evening they will hold their meeting with Shirley Hazlitt from Benmiller who will be speaking on Advanced Leadership Program in Agriculture.
