Making contact Shelley Bray is the voice on the phone tor the Ark Interlink program recently beginning in Brussels. Interlink will provide service and companionship to temporarily or permanently immobile people. Ark Interlink program begins By Bonnie Gropp A community program linking youth to people who are temporari ly or permanently immobile is being introduced in Brussels. Sallianne Patch, executive direc tor of the youth drop-in centre, The Ark, is initiating Ark Interlink, a service provided by the young peo ple from the Ark on a volunteer basis. Co-ordinator Shelley Bray says the young people, from Grades 7, 8 and 9 will be available to help dur ing the hours of 4-8 p.m. Monday to Friday. Weekends will be strict ly for essential service, she said. People interested in being "linked" with one of the Ark youths will be assessed by Mrs. Patch, after first contacting her or Ms Bray. Their name is listed by Ms Bray and they are then partnered with a teen or team member. "We thought the idea of them being part nered with someone was good as they would become familiar and a special bond may develop," says Ms Bray. "For the kids it will give them a sense of responsibility and experience." Mrs. Patch says the program has been designed to enhance the com munity bonding of young people by linking their energy with the practi cal needs of other citizens - their partners. She said it is hoped that team members will gain from the experience of being part of a com mon enterprise, perceiving anoth er's needs, demonstrating their value as a person and making choices and seeing them through. The teens, who may be called upon to run errands, shovel a walk or rake the leaves will receive no monetary benefit. However, each partner, after a successful assess ment will be given five "Link" cards. On the completion of each task one card will be given to the team member, who will record the service the date and the time the task took, then sign it. Cards will be taken to the Ark; from where they will be collected on a weekly basis by Mrs. Patch. After five tasks have been com pleted, Mrs. Patch will revisit the partners to discuss how things have gone. If things are fine the partner will receive another five cards. When a team member has a point value of 200, or 20 cards, they will receive a gift of appreciation from The Ark, Mrs. Patch says. All partners' requests must be done through Ms Bray by calling 887-9382 or Mrs. Patch at 887- 6024. There is an answering machine and Mrs. Patch says no call will go unretumed. Brochures and pamphlets are being distributed to groups that may benefit from or be interested in the Ark Interlink program. Mrs. Patch said that interest thus far has been encouraging with five partners and 10 team members already signed.
