MP likes infrastructure program
Happy Gang Seniors meet
Paul Steckle, Member of
Parliament for Huron-Bruce is
pleased at the signing of the
Canada-Ontario infrastructure
agreement. "I am confident that the
infrastructure program will mean
new jobs and economic growth to
not only Huron-Bruce, but all of
Ontario" said Mr. Steckle.
"I believe that the government
has a vital role in getting Canadians
back to work. We ran on that
during the election and have
quickly taken action upon reaching
office. Canadians will feel more
confident in government when they
see that election promises are put
into action" said Mr. Steckle.
The infrastructure program was

Blyth Midgets sweep first series
By Rusty Blades
The Blyth Midgets continued
their playoff odyssey last week as
they swept their first round series
and started their WOAA final
series in Wiarton on Jan. 30.
In Milverton on Jan. 24, Blyth
survived a bizarre refereeing
spectacle and easily ousted the
hosts from further playoff action by
a 7-3 score.
Blyth built a 3-0 lead 10 minutes
into the game thanks in part to a
pair of Ryan Chamney goals and a
single score from Christopher
Howson. Jason Heipel and Tim
Cowan assisted on Chamney's first
while Heipel and Wilfred Datema
added helpers on his second.
Linemales Brian McNichol and
Tim Lyons set up Howson for his
tally.
Milverton scored late in the first
and early in he second to close to
within one before Blyth put the
game away with two goals 16
seconds apart in the ninth minute of
the second frame. Chamney
initiated the outburst with his third
goal of the game off some fine
spade work by Cowan and Peter
Craig. Ben Hakkers and Jonathan
Collins then assisted on McNichol's
power play goal, 16 seconds later
to give Blyth a 5-2 lead. McNichol
gave Blyth a 6-2 lead with another
power play goal six minutes into
the third with Howson and Lyons
picking up helpers.
Although Milverton cut the lead
to 6-3, McNichol notched the hat
trick with a late, shorthanded,
unassisted effort to close out the
scoring and give Blyth the win.
Chris Lee played a cagey game
in the crease and the defence never
rested as Blyth eliminated
Milverton and advanced to the
WOAA C final against Wiarton a
centre which is situated somewhere
Book" Creating Opportunity. The
program is an integral part of the
Liberal government's commitment
to put Canadian's back to work,
while at the same time investing in
the physical infrastructure in local
communities.
In Ontario, the federal and
provincial governments will each
contribute $722 million to the
program. This contribution will be
combined with an equal contribu
tion by municipalities, school
boards and post-secondary
educational institutions making the
total Ontario contribution more
than $2.1 billion. Mr. Steckle said,
"The allocation for Huron-Bruce
will provide an important boost to
the local economy and funds for
near the North Pole.
Blyth travelled to Wiarton on
Jan. 30 and put together their finest
effort of the season in winning the
series opener 5-2. Blyth scored a
goal early as well as late in each of
the first two periods to build a 4-0
lead after two. Danny Gibbings
opened the scoring on a wild
scramble in front of the Wiarton net
with an assist to Collins. Heipel,
with help from Casey Boven,
upped the lead to 2-0 with seven
seconds remaining in the first
frame.
McNichol scored early in the
second on an unassisted, power
play effort to cap off an outstanding
solo rush. With one minute
remaining in the period, Heipel
beat the Wiarton defence to a loose
puck at centre ice, then went in
alone and deked the opposition
puckstopper to give Blyth an
insurmountable 4-0 cushion.
Wiarton finally succeeded in
penetrating the Blyth defence and
broke the goose egg one minute
into the third stanza. With three and
a half minutes left Wiarton cut the
lead to 4-2 with a funny deflection
off a Wiarton winger deep in the
slot. The intensity and discipline
shown by the Midgets throughout
the game never wavered as they ran
the game clock down. With the
Wiarton goalie headed to the bench
for an extra attacker, Craig and
Mike Heffron, set up McNichol's
empty net goal to seal the win with
32 seconds remaining in the
contest.
This 5-2 road win gives Blyth a
1-0 series lead in this best three out
of five WOAA C final series.
Game two is being hosted by Blyth
on Friday, Feb. 4 at 9 o'clock. Fans
have been hard to come by this
season but it is hoped that a good
crowd will be on hand to greet the
much needed local projects." He
concluded: "As the Member of
Parliament for Huron-Bruce, I will
work with local officials and
Provincial Members to organize
our efforts so as to achieve the
greatest gain to the constituency."
WZ plans card cavalcade
The sympathy of the community
is extended to the family of the late
Mary Longman of Seaforth Manor.
She passed away on Sunday, Jan.
30. She was a former resident of
Londesboro for many years.
W.I. members are asked to
remember the Card Cavalcade on
Midgets as they continue their
search for a WOAA title.
Sandwiched between their two
playoff games was the Ripley
Lions Midget Tournament on Jan.
29. Blyth had a tough day of
hockey losing both games.
Blyth opened against Paisley on
Saturday morning with a new
addition to the lineup. Mike
Heffron, who recently moved into
Blyth, has been signed and enjoyed
his first games with his new team.
Paisley outplayed Blyth in every
facet of the game, winning 6-1.
Paisley took a 3-0 first period lead
but Heipel put Blyth back into he
game early in the third. While
killing a penalty, Heipel and
Chamney broke away for a rink
length two on one break with
Heipel tipping in Chamney's
goalmouth pass to finish the rush.
Paisley added three more goals
and relegated Blyth to the
Consolation round with this 6-1
victory.
Next opponent on the agenda was
Ripley. Blyth played a spirited
game but were still a step behind
their foes as Ripley eliminated
Blyth from the tournament with a
4-2 win. After Ripley opened the
scoring, Blyth tied the game in the
second. Heffron, whose hockey
assets seem to be skating and
tenacious checking, provided the
spark as he scored on a scramble in
front with linemates McNichol and
Hakkers earning assists.
Ripley built a 4-1 lead and Blyth
added their final goal with just over
a minute left in the game. While
enjoying a two man advantage,
Craig unleashed a wicked shot
from the point that deflected into
the goal off of Chamney's stick.
Time expired with Blyth on the
short end of a 4-2 score which
knocked them out of the tourney.
