Davieses greet at Duff’s Greeters at Duffs United Church on this -10°F day of Jan. 30 were Chris and Shannon Davies. Rev. Banks wanted to let people know that the official board meets at Walton on Feb. 9 at 8 p.m. The UCW will meet at 12:30 on Feb. 2 starting with a pot luck dinner. Former members are invited. Feb. 16 the Sunday School will host a Pancake Breakfast at 8:30. For those wondering whether or not Rev. Banks will be the egg flipper this year have no fear for he has been promoted to a different job. Rev. Banks read from the Hebrew Scriptures - Deut. 18: 15- 20 and while the congregation sang "One more Step" the children came to the front for the children's story. He talked about authority and how God spoke with authority. Linda McDonald read the scripture lesson for today. Rev. Banks's sermon was titled "Heard any good sermons lately?" Rev. Banks tells of Paul wondering how the people will know of God unless someone tells them. It is the same question that is asked in the 20th century. How will the people know who Jesus is unless there is someone to preach the gospel? The question was posed to the congregation - To what extent does a sermon occupy our hearts and minds after we leave this place? At the dinner table? At the coffee shop? Is it important? The scribes were preachers too^ BLYTH 523-4551 Values In Effect From Monday, Jan. 31,1994 to Saturday, Feb. 5, 1994 Savings Are Based On Regular Retails We Reserve The Right To Limit Quantities To Normal Family Requirements. Paul, not noted for his preaching ability by his contempor aries, made up for it by his actions. He practiced what he preached. Rev. Banks remembers when the norm for writing sermons was to consist of three points and a poem lasting 20 minutes. Now it seems that 10 minutes is bordering on too long in this 'Don't bore me' culture. He said, 'there is a new nickname for the 17-29 age group which will succeed the baby boomers. The word is 'baby-busters’. They are described as the first generation to view entertainment not as a privilege but as a right. So in order to catch their attention the sermon must have some entertainment value. In Rev. Banks's view a sermon should instruct, convict, admonish and uplift. It is uplifting to know that there are many who do attend church even though they could be involved in more exciting, alternative activities, he said. A note in the bulletin that said - Watch your thoughts; they become words. Watch your words; they become actions. Watch your actions; they become habits. Watch your habits; they become character. Watch your character; it becomes your destiny. - Frank Outlaw Product of Chile No. 1 Grade Red or Green SEEDLESS GRAPES 2.84 kg 1.29.
