Madill High School in Wingham on Jan. 28. The team was very successful, winning 12 of 14 games played. Brussels PS news Students make ‘new’ things By Lisa Gilkes and Cheryl Cloakey Wednesday was the day for the Grade 8s and 7s to go to a volleyball tournament at F. E. Madill Secondary School. The girls' team was Kara Pepper, Tanya Mawhinney, Lesley Elliott, Lisa Coyne, Susie Black, Heather Douma, Jenny Gowing, Sherry Therrien, Amy Crawford, Mandy Sellers, Jenny McKercher, Ashley Gropp and Malinda Exel. The guys who made it were Cory Bragg, Robbie Burkholder, Jeremy Clark, Jason Crawford, Jason Kellington, Alex Leger, Michael McDonald, Jonathan Patch, Cory Smith, Scott Somers, Jonathan Stuggins, Jason Walker, Trevor Wilson, Steven Oldfield, and Kevin Mutter. Mrs. Peme and Mr. Prior were proud of the students and their performance. Mr. Wanless's grade 6/7 class is using everyday resources, and touring into something new. They are using wind, sun, water, and steam to make these "new" items. They will be attempting to make towers, boats, toothpick bridges, straight bridges, spaghetti bridges, stone bridges, curved bridges. They will make these all out of different materials as their inventions activities. Lodge plans dessert euchre The regular meeting of Morning Star Rebekah Lodge took place on Tuesday, Jan. 25 with Noble Grand Lois McCutcheon presiding. Plans were finalized for the annual dessert euchre party on Feb. 14 at 1 p.m. plus another euchre party is scheduled for Feb. 21 at 8 p.m. These are being advertised. Members enjoyed a game of bingo following the meeting. The next meeting will be held on Feb. 8. The Grade 8 class was busy for a couple of weeks, trying to gather information on inventors and their inventions. Some inventors included: Thomas Edison (light bulb), Benjamin Franklin (rocking chair plus many others), Alexander Graham Bell (telephone and headphones), Whitecomb Judson (zipper). Let's hope everyone had fun researching these topics. A kindergarten information meeting for parents was held Jan. 25. About 45 attended. Louise Sygrove, early years co-ordinator for Huron County Board of Education, explained how the junior kindergarten program is implemented in county schools, and answered questions. Parents had an opportunity to meet Mrs. Hall the kindergarten teacher, as well. Magazine Sales Fundraiser project begins on Feb. 3. Students raise money to help provide field trips, and drama presentations as well as repairing musical instruments. Looking for local heroes There are so many people out there who do so much to improve their community. Now you have a chance to say thanks. Beaver Leader Rusty (Lynda Shaw) headed the ceremony. Parents were invited to take part with the special event. New Beavers are Devon Josling, Jamie Ross, Anthony Deitner, Jacob Crosby, Francis Deitner and Jamie Crosby. It's time for area crafters and artists to get to work. The Brussels Agricultural Soci­ ety announced its preliminary prize list for this year's Fall Fair at the annual meeting, Jan. 19. Secretary-Treasurer Melody White says that the fair theme this year is "Pork" so many of the spe­ cial exhibits focus on that. For example crafters are invited to make stuffed pigs or podge pigs, while amateur photographers can win prizes for a shot of a porcine subject.
