I live in Brussels and am currently enrolled in Grade 12 at F. E. Madill Secondary School. I have chosen to be a part of the co-operative education program because I feel that experience is the best method of learning. My co-op placement is at Reid & Associates, an accounting firm in Wingham, where I am training to be a secretary. I work with Linda Smits, who is the secretary at Reid's. I really appreciate her patience with me, showing me how to operate the equipment in the office, explaining where everything is kept and how to do tasks, such as filing, and using the computer program, 'Supercalc'. Typing letters and envelopes and preparing them to be mailed, photocopying, answering the phone, and sending faxes are just some of the jobs I do as I train to be a secretary. On the computer, I work with the program 'Supercalc', a spreadsheet, and so far I have learned how to key financial statements. Although I have only been working as a secretary in the co-op program for about two months, I am enjoying the experience and the challenge of the job. It has helped me to make some decisions involving my future plans. By Mark Robinson Have you ever heard the expression "Experience is a great teacher." That's how I feel about my co-op placement through F. E. Madill Secondary School. Hi, my name is Mark Robinson, I am 17 years old and live on a farm near Belgrave. I am currently enrolled in the co-op program at F. E. Madill Secondary School. My co-op placement is at Gary Caldwell Construction near Blyth. My supervisor is Gary Caldwell. The co-op program has given me education and work experience in the field of construction. This will help me in this particular line of work in the future. Some of the duties I have been involved in are building bam doors, strapping a barn for steel, then installing the steel. I built stud walls for a manure storage, nailed down trusses, and strapped them. I also installed roof steel on the manure storage. I have also helped in the setting of poles for a hay bam. I would like to thank Gary Caldwell and his employees for teaching me the knowledge of the trade and for their patience. I would recommend this program to anyone who is willing to accept the challenge of the workplace. By Danny Hall My co-op placement at Ted Moran - Mechanical Ltd. is one of the best places to work because of the variety of jobs we do. The jobs take me from doing electrical work at one place to fixing plumbing at the next. My name is Dan Hall, I live in Brussels and I am 17 years old. I am in Grade 12 this year and I am taking the co-op program at F. E. Madill Secondary School. The work we do is mainly plumbing, duct work and electrical. In one morning we may be doing work in the shop for one hour and then travel to another town for the rest of the morning. The work I like the most is repairing furnaces and water heaters because it gives me a chance to learn more about them. The office is located in down town Wingham. My supervisor's name is Ted Moran. The people in the office that I work with are friendly and are always willing to help. I think that Ted Moran - Mechanical Ltd. is a good place to work if you are skilled in electricity or plumbing. By Kerri Foxton Enjoyment, interest, fun and learning all in one. For me this is my co-op placement at Sacred Heart School in Wingham. Hello, my name is Kerri Foxton. I live in Brussels, and am a Grade 12 student at F. E. Madill Secondary School. I am currently enrolled in the co-op program offered here. My placement is in the kindergarten class at Sacred Heart. I work with teachers, Mrs. Lorraine Hallahan, Mrs. Diane Lalonde and many others. The co-op program offers an inside look at what this job entails. It has its good points and bad points as every job does. It helps to determine if the field of work that you've been looking at pursuing in the future is really right for you. My placement does just that. It has helped me to decide that this is exactly what I would like to do in the future. Every day is a new adventure. I look forward to going to my co-op placement every other school day, to find a new experience waiting to be discovered. The teachers here have helped me feel right at home. I must admit when I first began I wasn't sure if the area of teaching was really right for me. However, working with these children is always a new learning experience for both of us. I have read stories to the children, helped them to write their name, played games with them, had the opportunity to supervise, along with many other experiences. My experiences al my co-op placement will be ones that will last me a life time. Cooperative Education has given me a chance to be a part of the on the job aspects of teaching. I feel that my co-op placement has and will better prepare me for both my career and personal plans in the future.
